Q: How many extracurricular activities should a 1st year university student join?
I know it all depends on your personality and what you can handle according to school and social, but what is your opinion? What do you think is the key number to achieve balance of social and school for a 1st year university student? Also, what types of extracurricular activities in 1st year university did you join personally?

A: Most people don't join any organized extracurricular activities. The choice is yours. Classes come first, but you also want time to just enjoy college life, not just organized activities. It does depend on how much time an activity takes. Some sports are very informal and only meet one or two hours a week, like soccer or swimming. Others, like a student newspaper or drama group, can take as much time as a part-time job. What did I join... freshman year, I joined a bowling league just because it was next to my dorm in the student union. I remember joining some student activist group (can't remember the cause, though) and going to a protest but I didn't like passing out flyers and fundraising, so I quit. I had to work my way through college, two jobs, so that took a lot of my time. I joined a food co-op and did the monthly volunteer work requirement there. I did a couple of drawing classes that weren't part of the university. I guess that was it for clubs and organized stuff. I was into running and yoga, but I did it on my own, not as part of a team or club.

Q: How did you keep fit in the university when you a university student?
How did you keep fit in the university when you a university student?

A: I may not give you the answer you want, because it is quite long, but the first thing that I see is that, you aren't really asking how, but how can you when you are a student, rather than what to do. You must take 1 hour out of your schedule. Nothing is that important that you can't take 1 hour of your time a day to exercise. You make up your own schedule and you should not make yourself that busy, that you have no time! The best way under your conditions to stay in shape is to get some rubber tubing and an exercise ball! It will take less time to do exercises on that than anything else. You can do it at home, which eliminates travel time as well as financially. You can do exercises on those that may take you 20 minutes to complete. also, grab yourself a jump rope and start jump roping! It is extremely high intensity, so take 30 seconds to start. Than everyday , add 30 seconds of jump roping! While you are doing that, you can walk in place until you are ready to go again to catch your breath. you can also by a mini trampoline. The rubber tubing can be bought at the store and comes in different strengths. Good luck.

Q: What were your experiences as a mature student at University?
Hi guys, I have been thinking quite a bit recently about going to university but as Im 23 I just want to get an idea of what it will be like as a mature student, I know Im not much older than the other students will be but by the time i actually start a course I will be 24. Does anyone have any experiences of going away for uni (rather than staying at home and commuting) as a mature student? Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

A: im 23 and just started uni in september and its great and all my grades so far are B's and A - because i have a lot more life experience than these other students and uni is not just about course work they also mark you on how you answer the questions and if you have a lot more worldly experience than everyone else your answers are gonna be better.all my other class mates got C - and D's so i did al lot better than them cos of my age.and also the tutors treat me with a lot more respect because im a mature student the other kids arwe always joking around and not taking things seriously they always say if they fail there is always next year and obviously the tutors mark them accordingly.

Q: At Fall 2009 I will attend The George Washington University as an undergraduate freshman student.?
I've never been to D.C. So positive or negative, what can I expect from D.C.? Do you think I will have a decent university student life there outside from academics. But if you want to talk about the university too, sure. I will get a degree from Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. Thanks.

A: I'm from maryland so I know a thing or two about DC. For one, never go to Southeast or Northeast (the city is divided into 4 quadrants) that's where are all the crime ridden areas are and where people get shot on a daily basis. The other areas that have some crime are Adams Morgan, U Street, and the Shaw neighborhoods. But don't worry, GW is in Foggy Bottom which is like one of the nicest parts of the city. It's right along the Potomac. The western part of the city is really nice and there is a lot to do. You'll be close to Georgetown which has great shopping. There are good clubs in the Dupont Circle area and other things to do along the Metro Red Line stops. There are other colleges in DC like Georgetown and American, so you will be mixing with other college students. Just stay in the western part of the city and you'll be fine.

Q: Do I qualify as an International student for University application?
I'm applying to university soon (Nov-Jan) and I was wondering if I qualify as an International Student. I currently live in Hong Kong and have a Hong Kong Permant Residence Identity Card. I also have an American Passport so I'm a US citizen.

A: Presume you are asking about American universities not British ones? The American universities almost always decide on your status according to your passport. They ask on the application form if you hold a US passport and categorise you accordingly. My daughter has dual nationality and was educated in England. Despite this, she was not considered an international student.

Q: About non traditional student attending a four year college or university?
Are there any restirctions for a non traditional student attending a four year college or university? Do students have to take a lessor course load if you are a non tradional student?

A: It only depends if you are part-time, age doesn't matter. If you are a part-time student, even at 18, then you take a lesser course load. If you are full-time, they usually have a minimum # of required credits per semester. I would just check with your college registrar to be sure. But that's usually what happens. Good luck!

Q: Difference between community college 2 years then university next four then a student in university 4 years?
A student majoring in electrical engineering going to a community college the first two years then going to a university, and a student going straight to a university in the same major. What would be all the differences? A student majoring in electrical engineering going to a community college the first two years then going to a university, and a student going straight to a university in the same major. (College Park Maryland) Not the differences in ,money but who will be more successfull and educated

A: Depends on the schools. Usually, the 4 yr school will better prepare someone for their major, but that is not an iron clad rule. There are some very good CC and depending on the 4 yr school, the CC may actually be better. Also, going the CC route entails transferring. Often not a problem when transferring between large public schools in the same state, but other than that it can be a hassle to get equivalent credits and etc. With such a structured program as engineering, this could be a real problem.

Q: What would it take for a student to get into McGill university?
What GPA, SAT Scores, Extra Curriculars and other aspects would be nessecary to qualify someone safely somewhere as a student at McGill University (if you're applying from high school to undergradtuate)? That was a very unhelpful response. I already checked the website, which is why I made this question.

A: Well you obviously didn't read the website carefully, because it answers all your questions... McGill does not look at SATs for applications to undergrad programs, and the website will tell you what US applicants need to submit specifically since we have CEGEP marks here, not high school (you have to have your high school diploma but that's all). The application process is really clear, just take a look at it more closely. Good luck!

Q: What are your favorite student/university towns in Western/Northern Europe?
I am looking for a place that is exploding with life and student activity! Thanks

A: Well student haven's in the Netherlands are Leiden, Utrecht and Amsterdam, and in the UK, well pretty much all over to be honest, but Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Nottingham (to name a few) will get you a good student (and social) life.

Q: How can a university student get tested for a learning disability?
Hello, As a child I was a very fast learner and very quick to process information. Then in high school I began to process information very slowly and now in university I am never completely done my test before I'm out of time and it takes me an extremely long time to read my textbooks. I know that I'm not stupid I just feel like I'm struggling to process thought at the speed that my peers do and I want to know if there's anything wrong + how to improve.

A: Some colleges have a LD department. My son was tested at his Community college. It was an eight hour test over a couple of days. We had to pay for it. But we got an official report that he can use at his four year college.

Q: What makes an A university student?
I've always been a B student in university getting As here and there, but I wonder what really makes an A student? What is it that sets them apart from those that get Bs? Granted some people are naturally smart but what about those that just work hard and get As? I always had good notes, and studied, but for some reason getting all As seems to elude me.

A: I think the courses that I got As in were different in that I was immersed in the material. There was a natural curiosity and interest in the material that made me seek out additional materials and ask more questions than I normally would have. I think an A student approaches every class with this same intensity and aim to delve out additional information and be immersed in that material for the benefit of knowledge or just getting the A. Either way, whenever I have approached a class with determination and a "I will not be defeated spirit" I always got an "A". Hope that helps!
