Q: What are some good summer programs, that look good on college apps to go to?
I have been looking at the NYLF, and Global Leadership Adventure programs. Does any one have any other good programs they went to over the summer? Especially ones that look good on college apps? Thanks!

A: A lot of colleges offer summer programs where you live in the dorms during summer term, take two classes and earn credits. Doing well in these programs shows you will likely do well in college full time. You get the creds, it looks good on your app, and because the term is only 8 weeks, you still have time to do that mission trip to Guatemala and build schools for the poor children. And just because you earned credits at one school over the summer does not obligate you to attend it for 4 years. You just transfer the courses when you make it to the school of your choice. I did a summer program at UC Santa Barbara when I was in HS, and I eventually went to Berkeley. It was great.

Q: Any tuition free summer programs for my kids?
I would like my eight year old daughter to get out there this summer and learn. I am enthusiastic about having her participate in any summer program - whether it be for academics, sports, arts & creativity or speaking classes. The problem is, our family isn't financially incompetent to support her. Please recommend some tuition - free programs that my daughter can join. Thank you !

A: I would look in to local city programs. Where I grew up the school district ran a summer thing that kids could go and play basketball or tennis and other things. Each place was supervised by a highschool student that was trained and getting paid to be there. All you had to do was get your kid there.

Q: How good are the Columbia summer programs in new york city?
i just got into the stock market program at columbia summer program. has anyone gone on any other program and was it not a waste of time?

A: The summer programs admit just about anyone who is willing to pay, but that doesn't mean they are no good. I'm sure you'll learn a lot and have some fun in NYC. You'll get out of it whatever you put into it. During the summer, most students at NYU and Columbia go home, so both schools use their summer programs to gain some extra revenue and to fill classes which would be otherwise be empty. I've taken summer classes at both NYU and Columbia and they were not bad at all. In fact, campus will be nice and empty which is a nice change from the hectic fall and spring semesters. In summary, as long as you'll be studying something you are interested in and the credits transfer to another program which would give you some kind of terminal degree or certificate, I don't see any problem with taking part in one of these summer programs. Have fun!

Q: Are there any good opera summer programs for a 17 year old senior in high school?
I'll be attending college in the fall (unsure of where yet) as a vocal performance major.I'm looking for a summer opera program that will really prepare me for my freshman year and give me some performance opportunities. It would be cool if the summer program traveled abroad as well.

A: I don't know how good it is, but I just heard about this one from a former student who works for them. Worth checking out!

Q: Summer programs for high school students?
I'm looking for summer programs in Arizona, i know its a little earlier, but i want to get a head's start. I also would prefer it being in the maricopa county. I'm a freshman at the moment, and i'm taking geometry, i'm hoping to find a summer program where i can take alg 3-4 and would still count as high school credit.

A: moonlight_shadow, Only the students really know for sure. http://www.onlinehighschoolreviews.com/Arizona-High-Schools.html

Q: Does anyone know any performing arts summer programs in new york?
either in brooklyn, manhattan, or queens. we need a program that has singing and acting classes and one that gives the option to come on only saturdays instead of the entire summer. we are teenagers so we need a program for teens.

Q: Summer programs in medicine for high school students?
I'm a junior in high school and I would like to do a summer program pertaining to medicine/biology. Do you know any affordable college programs I can apply for? And also, is it possible to intern at a hospital and gain "hands-on"(or close to it at least!) experience as a high school student?

A: Your most important resource could be your family doctor. Leave a message for them indicating you need to ask a question when they have time. And then let them know that you are interested in medicine and would really like to do some sort of internship. They might be able to refer you to a program or a colleague who could help. Doctors have access to medical journals, associations and networks that might have the type of program you are looking for. If that doesn’t work out call your local community hospital and ask for the volunteer coordinator. Without medical training it is unlikely that you would get to do actual medical procedures but volunteering at the hospital would give you opportunities to observe, learn medical terminology and interact with real patients. You get out of every experience what you put into it. A hardworking interested volunteer who is looking at a future medical career will be much appreciated by overworked hospital staff. Even volunteers get access to parts of the hospital that normal patients or visitors wouldn't.

Q: Summer programs that look appealing on a college app?
I want to get into a really good college and i feel that i need to do something to show that my interests go beyond what is offered at school. i've looked into summer programs done at colleges but they all go for like three weeks and i really only have a week to spare in my summer. Any ideas?

A: If you're really interested in attending a good college, you should be able to risk a whole summer to attend a good program...most are 3 weeks to 7 weeks, except for one that I know of at Georgetown...but it would depend on what you're looking to "major" in. http://www12.georgetown.edu/scs/sphs/index.html Good luck!

Q: Do you meet native teens your own age in summer foreign exchange programs?
I want to foreign exchange in Japan but i cant during the school year but i want to meet teens my own age who acually live there but i cant tell if any of the summer programs let you do that.

A: last summer i went to mexico for 1 month as a cultural exchange/study abroad type thing. the program i went with did not facilitate interaction with local teens, but i ended up hanging out with many teens that i met randomly on the street, some that i still talk to! basically we'd just approach teens on the street and be like, "quieres ser mi amigo?" (do you want to be my friend?) bottom line: it is what you make it. good luck and have fun!

Q: does anyone know of any creative writing summer camps/programs for teen writers?
I’m starting way ahead and I’m trying to get some names of some Arts summer programs that have creative writing workshops. I’m not looking for the cheesy children ones, I’m looking for ones that are for actual teen writers. Does anyone know of any?

Q: Who has enrolled their children in the Mcdonald;s Summer programs offered in the Malls In Manila Mcdonalds?
I am considering enrolling my ten year old Daughter in McDonald's one week summer program for kids offered in Manila-does any have any experience with this program?

A: I have three cousins who have enrolled in McDonald's Summer Program. They don't really do any work - they just stand by and play around. Your kid also gets freebies on her birthday if she joins - as well as some food during the day. On the end, she will get a crew ID and a souvenir. Not much of a learning experience though.
