Q: do online degree programs really work?

A: If the school is accredited then yes. But there often very expensive. You can sometimes get the same exact degree, at a local community college for at least half the price. And many community colleges offer online courses.

Q: Can I get an Avionics Degree or Technical Certification online, or at least get started?
I am an active duty Soldier in the US Army. When my enlistment is up I intend to re-enlist, mostly because my school transcripts prevent me from getting into a college Id like to attend (at this point anyways) and I dont want to be thrust back into the civilian world at 25 with no degree. Im really interested in the Avionics field but going to school, or going to campus rather, is impossible for me being an active duty soldier. Im trying to find a school that offers online degree programs or certifcations, or one that can at least get me started in the right direction. Im looking for the following answers - What colleges / tradeschools should I look to apply to? - Is it neccessary to have a degree vs. certifications or do they go hand in hand? - If you have experience in Avionics or a related field, maybe you can reccomend a career path? Any help on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated, Im trying to put my life back together, lots of catching up to do... Thank you.

A: My dad was an Air Force crew chief on F-106's way back in the day. His training that he received from the Air Force in the Avionics systems and electricity were some of the best. After retiring from the Air Force, he was able to get a job on with Boeing working on 727's (when they were still making them), 737's, and 757's. His experience and training kept him ahead of the game. But at his time, having work experience was a key, not having certificates and licenses. But as things went on and times changed, he realized that if others wanted to go into this field, they would have to change too. When I was at the age where I understood what career opportunities were available, I looked at what my dad did and thought this was cool stuff. Working with airplanes, avionics and navigation systems. That is what I wanted to do. As things went, my dad gave me some career paths that one, included a military background and getting into the Avionics field this way, or going to a vocational school and learning from them. I am hoping that you were in the Avionics field in the Army working on helicopters and the like. But you don't mention that fact. The things that I have found with vocational schools is the fact that most of your training is all GA, or general aviation. There is a little that is done to incorporate heavy aircraft but unless you work for an airline or a repair facitlity that does heavy aircraft maintenace, you will be limited to small aircraft. Your best bet of getting a degree in the Avionics field or aircraft in general may be through Embry Riddle. They offer online classes and depending on where you live, there maybe a campus near you. See the link. As for my career path, I ended up getting my vocational certificate as an Aviation Electrician. I learned the same systems that are onboard current airplanes, both commercial and general. Even though there are the glass flightdecks, the theory is the same for both types of airplanes. Then I went to Airframe and Powerplant school. Most A&P schools offer a Associates Degree if you complete the A&P and 45-90 additional credits. The A&P mechanic name is being replaced by the AMT or Aircraft Maintenace Technician program. Which I think sums it up better. Not only are you a mechanic, you do electrical, run engines, do repairs and the like. I regret not completing my AA after getting my A&P license, though I am still young (42) and may still do this any way. Depending on your military training, you might be able to show current work history, military in your case to allow you to take your A&P tests. If you don't qualify for this you need to log the hours, 1050 for airframe, and 1080 for powerplant. I might have these hours incorrect but if you do the two year program at an acredited voc-school, you will get the required training to be able to take the three tests, General, Airframe, and Powerplant, as well as the oral and practical exams. If you complete all these exams with passing grades, you will then be given your license. I feel very fortunate that I got into this career field. I work for Boeing on the 737 program. I of course didn't just end up as an flightline technician/avionics but started out routing wires on the 747 and worked my way to functional testing and then to the flightline where the planes are preflighted and then deliveried to the customers (this will be my 19th year at Boeing). But even as an Avionics tech, or AMT, the future of aviation is a bright one if you have the training. The new 787 has lots of new technologies. Your at an age where you might be working and fixing them. There are lots of opportunities if you choose to pursue them. Below are a couple of links to get you started I got off of Google. Q: Online degree programs?
I am wondering, what do you think about online master degree programs? Do you think employers prefer the on campus way? I am trying to get my master is Special Education and do not have a lot of time and energy to go to school after work....Online is a perfect setting for me.. Have any of you taken an online degree program? Was it good? Thanks everybody

A: I take about half my courses on line and half in-class. I am hot as impressed with the quality of the education I receive on line. I feel like you are basically teaching yourself. Last semester, my professor made us read 6 books, and only commented once every 10 days to each of our sessions. I have also had problems with professors not responding to e-mails and questions. This is not exactly what I would call "teaching." Since I pay an extra $100 for these courses, I wonder what I am paying for. I take the on line classes due to convenience of my schedule. I am not sure how employers will view it, but if I had to hire someone with only an on line education, I would look at them very carefully.

Q: online degree?
what are the best acredited online degree programs

A: Baker College's on-line degree program is very good. Check out www.baker.edu Affordable at $180 per credit hour Quick with 4 semesters per year, 2 6-week sessions per semester. Accredited. My degree and transcript looks the same as those from Baker College's traditional classroom degrees.

Q: Does anybody know of excellent online degree programs from public schools. It has to be 100% online though?
I'm not looking for-profit institutions like Uni of PHoenix, or so forth. It has to have an easy enrollment process, and the online degree must be 100% online, preferablly in business..HELP

A: University of Maryland University College. They have like 40 or so programs online.

Q: I'm thinking about getting my Masters online, what are the best ONLINE Degree programs out there (accredited)?
What universities, have online degree programs?

A: There are many universities. You may want to examine your goal and see the various programs. Often programs have field accreditation in addition to the university's accreditation. I am attending Capella University for my PhD and have had a great experience. Nova Southeastern University is a leader in distance education although we do not hear of them much. Do not just go by the schools that you hear of the most. There are many out there that are very reputable that do not need to market themselves. Also check the Dept of Education, Better Business Bureau, and the proper regional accrediting for more information on your school of choice. Greatest Luck!

Q: Reputed online or distance-learning Master's degree programs from regular universities?
I'm interested in getting a Master's degree. I won't be able to attend grad school in person because of personal reasons, so I'm looking at online programs from respected and "regular" public or private universities (not DeVry, ITT, Univ. of Phoenix, etc. ). Do any of you have any recommendations on what universities' programs I should look at? I'm interested in pursuing an MS in the following subjects, so I would appreciate any relevant recommendations that you can make. - Computer Science (and related subjects, like information systems) - Math (all forms of it) - Finance, Financial Engineering, Economics, and related subjects.

A: Try the California State University system. I got my MBA TOTALLY online. You can look at their offerings at http://odp.csusuccess.org/ I checked out Duke and some of the higher end univeristies, but CSU was also more economical for me. Most classes were great, but some of the teams I was on had difficulties - on duty in Iraq, illness, etc. Only one difficult team member. The professors responded quickly online and were very good.

Q: does oxford university u.k. offer online degree programs in english language?

A: I don't think so, email onlinecourses@conted.ox.ac.uk but I think they only offer online long courses in computing, local history and human rights law and they are postgrad diplomas and a masters. No undergrad degrees.

Q: I have over 100 credits in a Biology degree program, anyone know of any online bio degree completion programs?

A: There are four that are ideally suited for your situation: Excelsior College (http://www.excelsior.edu), NY Thomas Edison State College (http://www.tesc.edu); NJ Charter Oak State College (http://www.cosc.edu); Ct. Athabasca University (http://www.athabasca.edu/); Canada Each of these is very generous with transfer credit from accredited schools and each is regionally accredited themselves. Their original model was to serve exactly the purpose of consolidating past coursework from a variety of colleges into a single transcript and degree.

Q: Online Degree Programs?
Ok so lets say someone wants to get a degree from an online degree program like Kaplan University. Do you think it would be a waste of time vs. going to a regular 4 year college? Will an employer look at a persons resume and see Kaplan and move on to the next resume?

A: You have to look at the accreditation issues according to your major. I am going to the Art Institute online because of 1) My husband is in the Army and we tend to move around a lot. 2) I have 2 toddlers and 3) Daycare is too damn expensive. I checked the accreditation scope of the programs and the school I am at is accredited. What are you planning on going for?

Q: Online degree?
so i am thinking of spending money on one of these online programs where you earn a certificate or degree to work in a certain industry i have heard good things from real life people(not vendors old friends)one guy spent six months online now he makes 300 bucks a day. my question is has anyone out there taken one of these online classes ?if so how was it? did you actually get a nice paying job after?was it worth it? ...................btw i dont expect to make tons of money if i do go tru with this i am just hoping to make more than minimum wage i realize its not like going to harvard

A: I have not taken a class online (yet?) but I would think that some 'colleges' are better than others....you might want to go to www.ripoffreport.com and read up on whatever college you are thinking about applying to to see if others that have attended your specific college have any major complaints. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide.
