Q: What are some maintenance tips and programs to help keep my new laptop healthy? ?
I just got a HP Pavilion DV4, AMD Turion x2, running on Windows Vista. I was wondering what programs I should install to keep it in good health and running fast. I already have CC Cleaner and Trend Micro Internet Security. Anything else I should have. (Preferably inexpensive or free) . Also, any good tips for me, who's new to this, to help keep my laptop fast, healthy, and virus free. Thanks.

A: Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow". Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners. http://www.make-pc-fast.com/ You can download and scan your computer for free.

Q: Help! How do you transfer your files and programs from your old computer to a new laptop.?
My manager has a gateway using xp office professional, he needs to transfer all his files and programs to a new laptop which I think is xp or vista. He depends on me to do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

A: This is a bad situation. The only thing that can be done is by buying an external hard drive. You can buy these at your local Wal-Mart or anywhere else that sells computer equipment. They are pretty pricey, but they are worth it. I have an 80 GB external myself, and love it. This is the only way to transfer from one computer to another. Unless you want to chance sending the information over the internet in form of email attachments, which I would never recommend. Hope this helps.

Q: Can the discs that come with pre-installed programs on a new computer be used on an additional computer?
My son got a new laptop with Adobe Elements and Microsoft Office, pre-installed. Discs for these programs were also in the box. Could these discs be used to install the programs on my daughter's computer, or would doing so violate some regulation? Thank you.

A: You can install tha programs but may not be able to use them. Office requires a serial number that is potentially already in use on your sons computer.

Q: Do you have to buy all new programs if you update to Vista?
I am thinking about buying a new laptop, but all the new ones are comming with Vista. I have alot of expensive programs that i am not willing to shell out the $$ to rebuy (ie adobe cs2 and others, office, pagemaker, acrobat). I want to know if Vista will work with them. I like this... "DEMAND from your supplier that they provide you with a computer with Windows XP and not Vista. Why should you take what "they" want to give you? Where's your freedom of choice? In a free market, you should be able to choose your operating system; not take what they impose on you. The more people pushing to have this choice, the more effect it will have." why should we have to be told what we want in an OS as the consumer? i know microsoft woul like to think they are god, but to force Vista on us... come on!! I heard that Vista tracks what you install and do can anyone confirm?

A: alot of xp programs run fine on vista, but you *will* run into some that don't work on vista and require the latest version. cs2/office certainly work alright on vista without any fiddling. you'll probably have much worse problems with external hardware than software, most non-standard hardware will not work using the old xp drivers and not all companies have produced vista capable drivers yet. some never will. so if you own things like bluetooth adapters, usb television tuners, games controllers and such you may have a rough ride getting them to work. all the software you mention should be ok but that doesn't necessarily apply to others.

Q: Is there any ways of transferring downloads and programs from my old PC to my new one?
I have an old computer that I am using now and I just got a new one. I am hesitant about plugging in my new one because I dont want to loose all my things such as photos, music downloads and awesome expensive programs on my old computer. Is there any way of getting them to my old pc to my new one. Please explain in words that are simple to understand to the common computer user such as little 'ol me.. any info is appreciated and helps a million!

A: First make sure both PC's are off and unplugged. The simplest way is to take out the old hard drive from the old PC. Unplug the Hard Drive, but pay attention to how you unplugged the Hard Drive as you will need to put the same plugs from the new PC onto the old Hard Drive. Don't worry, the plugs can only go one way, so don't force the plugs. They should slide in easily. In the back of the Hard Drive is a plastic tab that straddles pins. On the Hard Drive should be a schematic showing how the plastic piece allows you to make the Hard Drive Master, Slave or Cable Select. You want to place the plastic piece on Slave. Place the old Hard Drive into the new PC. Make sure you plug in the power and the IDE cable into the old Hard Drive. The IDE cable should be already plugged into the new Hard Drive in the new PC, but there should be a second plug on the long gray cable. There is a "Key" on the black part of the IDE plug that will correspond with the 'Key" on the old Hard Drive. Once you have everything plugged in, turn on the PC and look for the key combo to get into the BIOS. You need the BIOS to detect the Old Hard Drive. Usually the computer does this automatically, but if you need to, have the BIOS look for it. If successful, the BIOS will show both Hard Drives. Exit and Save. Once Windows loads, it should already show the Old Hard Drive listed with it's own Drive Letter (such as D:). If not, go to the Device Manager (it is in the Control Panel) and have the PC look for the Hard Drive. It should have found it automatically. If you show both Hard Drives, you have two choices... First, Create a new folder on the C: Drive (such as Old Computer) and drag and drop the files you want to save into that new folder. But, better yet, leave everything on the old Hard Drive since you can access them anytime. You could use the Old Hard Drive to store important files. To make more room on the old Hard Drive, just delete everything that is not needed anymore that is also on the C: Drive (such as Program Folder)..

Q: How to transfer programs from an old computer to a new one?
I have an old, small computer with Windows 2000 with all my Microsoft programs on it and how can I move them to my new computer

A: If they are seperate whole computers, (meaning your not just changing parts and keeping the hard drive) one way is to network the two computers together (connect both computers directly by plugging in the internet cable from one computer directly to the other.) and then on both computer go to start>programs>accessories>system tools>files and settings transfer wizard. then just follow the prompts and it should work if you do not have a firewall on either computer. if you have a firewall you will need to disable it temporarily. another way that takes longer but is a little more simple is manually transfer the files by backing up all your programs onto a cd, or mass removable storage media like an external HD and then just transfer your files and programs from the old computer to the new one that way.

Q: Do you hate the included trial programs that come with a new computer?
My computer came with about 25 trial games mixed in with 9 free games. The new Vista "games" menu makes it look like separate programs when it turned out that the trial games came from a single module that accessed the games online. I took a gamble and deleted it hoping that the free games would remain. They did. Why can't computers come with a single file with instructions on what can be removed without affecting anything?

A: Yes definitly, apart from the sonic disk burning software. But they do that as when the manufactuarer puts all that crap on they get money from the software company's as its classed as advertising (hoping you will buy it once youve tried it). The manufatuer makes more money therefore makes the computer cheaper. But i just uninstall it all!, but this pc im using now i built it myself so theres no crap on it!.

Q: What are good (and safe) programs to download to protect my new computer from spyware and viruses?
Also, are there any programs that delete temporary internet files and things like that? Thanks.

A: Classic talks too much and doesn't know what he's talking about. Spysweeper is the way to go. The best software you should get is Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is ELITE software. It blocks over 438,000 definition threats, which contain several fringerprints with each(you can do the math). No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything and has active shields. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none. Don't waste your time with AVG, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, mcafee, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, spyware blaster, spyware guard, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they are free. They are NOT good. I even guaranDAMNtee my answers and will help through IM if needed. As far as deleting temp files and the sort, I would recommend Norton Systemworks. It does great deleting the junk.

Q: How do I transfer programs and files from my old computer to my new computer? Do I install each program again?
How do I transfer all of my files and programs from one computer to another?

A: Actually you can transfer programs. Just need a tool that can do it. If you have $50 more - you can buy PC mover. It's designed to transfer you whole system to a new computer. Have lots of glitches but considered to be a most popular program in the field. If you prefer a free solution you can try PickMeApp (free Beta) in combination with Windows File and Settings transfer Wizard. Install new OS, then run PickMeApp to move programs, then move your files and settings (and reinstall programs that PickMeApp can't find).
