Q: Is Westmont College in Santa Barbra a good college to get a teaching degree?
I am looking at colleges, and really need to know if Westmont is a good college or not to get a teaching degree! I want to be a History Teacher!

A: Looks like a fine college. Have you talked to a counselor there about your plans yet?

Q: do i have to have a teaching degree in the u.s if i want to teach english in a foreign country?
I want to teach english to preschoolers in japan as apreschool teacher and i want to know whether or not i'd have to have a teaching degree in the u.s first to be able to do it.

A: I was in your boat. To teach in Japan, generally all you need is a Bachelor's degree in any subject and a TEFL certification (I got mine through Bridge-Linguatec online, I recommend it. It is comprehensive and challenging). I got my BA in Political Science and the certification, and was offered dozens of jobs that I couldn't take because I started my Master's in Public Administration. They prefer individuals with Master's in any subject, but you'd get a job in no time if you have an MA or MS in ESL or TEFL. I would do it now, but I am qualified to teach political science at the community college level for waaaay more money, so I'm doing that instead.

Q: Teaching degree in NSW recognised in other states?
I am just wondering whether a teaching degree that was obtained in NSW would be recognised in other states such as Queensland or WA? I know the structures are different in each state, but what extra do you have to do to get the teaching qualification in other states? Thanks So i dont have to do any extra courses to teach? Because the syllabuses, i guess would be different? Thanks

A: Yeah of course it would be - I know stacks of people I went to uni with who did either Bachelors of Teaching or D Ed's and yeah a number of them are teaching both interstate now and even overseas...they studied in VIC

Q: Has anyone attended University of Phoenix for a Teaching Degree?
I really want to go back to school to get my teaching degree. I have attended city college off and on and it just doesn't work with my schedule. Only thing is I am afraid of going to a dead end school. I went to Institute of Technology and it was a joke... any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A: You may want to consider another online school with a real campus. Mine is cheaper and better than U of Phoenix. They offer teaching degrees that lead to licensure too. My school is nationally and regionally accredited, you may want to check it out: http://www.apu.apus.edu/index.htm I have completed my Bachelor's with them and I'm about to start my Master's with them too. They provide quality education, as you can see, they got the right to offer Master's degrees that directly lead to teaching licensure. I think this school would absolutely help you if you have a busy schedule because there are classes starting every month. Good luck!

Q: i want to teach child care at the high school level. so do i need a vocational degree or a teaching degree?
i know a teaching degree is needed to teach high school. but i want to teach child care at the high school level. so what courses do i need to take? do i also need a vocational degree?

A: In California, you must have a Bachelor's and a credential to teach high school. Unless you are teaching a vocational class, which child care might be. Each state and district are different, so you will have to see. With budgets being what they are, I do not know of any schools near me who even teach child care in high school- we are focused on core classes and basics. Early childhood education is reserved for college.

Q: Is it worth getting a TEFL if I already have a teaching degree?
Going travelling next year and want to teach as I travel to supplement my budget. I already have a primary education degree and was wondering if its worth getting a TEFL teach english foreign language, or just using my degree? Is it worth the money and will it be of use? I mainly hope to teach in Thailand. Thanks!

A: Yes, it is definitely worth it. You will have more opportunity of landing a job at a reputable school; in some countries it is a legal requirement; and you will benefit from the course and build up contacts for the future. In the first year of teaching all new teachers find the grammar difficult (eg: What is the difference between "going to" future and "present continuous for future"?) the course will help with this as well as giving you ideas for activities etc. I did a B.Ed but am glad to have also done a TEFL cert. It's definitely worth the money. Good luck and enjoy it!

Q: Would you recommend getting a full teaching degree or going through a licensure program?
I already have a degree and I am aware of the NC Teach program. Would it be worth it to obtain a full degree in Elementary Ed?

A: You can miss out on lots basic training that can prove valuable later but it can be done. A co-worker who has the much of the technical knowledge he needed for the courses he taught in middle and high school didn't have the "sixth sense" of watching behind him and instead, focused on what was in front of him (or on his emails) and I ended up dealing with all the broken, stolen or messed up tools and materials in "my" lab. I know it is something that can be learned on the job but it has taken me years to get him anywhere close to where he needs to be. Granted, I've got 20+ years and he has 10 but I believe all the hours of clinical observations and pre-student teaching better prepared those of us who came through the traditional path. He did get his masters in education after he started teaching. On the positive side, he has a provisional teaching certificate that he doesn't have to worry about getting additional hours of credit to keep it up to date. Another teacher who is almost 20 years older than me but has been teaching for only 10 years after being in the military, airline, headhunter and drafting industries is one of the best teachers I've ever met and has a provisional certificate without going through a specific educational degree program and hasn't gotten his masters. Both teachers have Political Science degrees so, like politicians, there are naturals and there are crooks! I believe elementary teachers have a harder job to do than I in a large high school but get far fewer resources in terms of time, supplies and money! I'd suggest you find a school you'd like to work in and ask the principal and a teacher to allow you to shadow them for a day or two. You should get time to see some of the skills needed and be able to decide for yourself which path you should follow. Good luck!

Q: What else can you do with a TEACHING DEGREE??
I am currently working towards my teaching degree (EC-4) and was wondering what other careers, besides teaching, can I get into?

A: Most any job that requires a degree and isn't picky about what field it is in.

Q: Teaching Degree in MN but want to Teach in WI?
I have a biology degree and a teaching certification from the university of Minnesota Twin Cites so I am cleared to teach in Minnesota. What are the requirements to teach in Wisconsin?

A: just try to look on this site http://www.google.com/ it's help

Q: Is it possible to get a teaching degree to be able to teach in both the USA and Canada for middle school on up
I am an American, my husband is Canadian. I'd like to keep my options open for teaching since we'll probably jump between living in the States and Canada. Rightnow I'm in the research stage for becoming a teacher and trying to decide where to start the education to become one. Would I be able to teach in the States if I got a Canadian teaching degree or vice versa?

A: you would get your degree in education, then you take a certification test,,,,,, i would imagine that you would then just take the test for the other country,,,,,contact a couple of colleges or universities, in both countries, that offer education degrees, and ask them

Q: I want to be a preschool or art teacher. but I didnt graduated with a teaching degree?
I like working with kids. but graduated with a degree in illustration. how many more classes or years of school do I need to go to to get a teaching license? I live in Ct if that makes a difference in requirements

A: if you want to teach preschool you don't need any more training. but, you will be making 9 bucks an hour for the rest of your life and you won't have summers off. if you want to become an art teacher, you could probably have your teaching cert in about a year's worth of courses, and one semester of student teaching. there are some colleges out there that offer teaching licenses on an accelerated program, but usually those are for specific subjects (like math and science). call a college in your area that is known for their education program and ask if they offer a "post-baccalaureate certification program"...let them know you have a degree in art and would like to get your certificate. good luck!

Q: Where can I get a degree teaching english as a second/foreign language?
I have a bachelor degree in English. I am interested in getting certified to teach English as a second language. I don't seem to be able to find any info on this. I keep finding info for people who want to learn English not teach it. An online program would be ideal or somewhere in Michigan.

A: Where are you in Michigan? EMU has a good program, but the program wasn't a good fit for me. I completed my MA-TESOL at Madonna University (in Livonia). Very good program!! I would highly recommend it. They offer the MA program (with K-12 endorsement), or just the ESL endorsement (if that's what you're looking for). www.madonna.edu If you plan on teaching in Michigan (K-12), you do need at least the ESL endorsement. You can't get this online. If you plan on teaching in Michigan (higher ed), you'll need an MA. I just don't want you to waste your time/money with some crappy online course.

Q: Can I open my own private writing studio and teach writing if I do not have a teaching certificate/degree?
I am a children's novelist. My first book will be coming out in June. I have always wanted to use my writing as a springboard to teach creative writing. My background is in business, but I do not have a bachelor's degree. In the state of Washington, can I open my own creative writing studio and teach kid's/adults how to write creatively if I do not have a degree or teaching certificate? Thanks!

A: as long as it is a private business and does not call itself a school you can...you will have to sell your clients on your ability to teach based on your experience...

Q: How can you get into teaching without a teaching degree?
I have a bachelor's in communication, and would like to get into teaching. I wouldn't want to have to get another bachelors. How does one go about this? I would want to teach High School. To answer the question below, I am in New York State.

A: * Call your local public school headquarters, and ask if there is an "alternative certification" program where as long as you have a college degree, you can take classes/tests to get certified while you are already teaching and deduct the costs from your pay. If you teach a subject outside your credits, you may be required to earn additional course credits in that. * Also ask if there is another group that offers certification outside the school district. In Houston it is called Region IV and it is better than the program offered by the public schools. Compare costs and requirements, and get recommendations from other teachers which one is better for your field of interest. * Can you contact Teach for America? This nonprofit assigns college grads to teaching assignments to offset college loans. While you explore that, can you substitute teach? This may help you decide what subject, class size, demographics, etc. suit your teaching style, or which school administration you prefer. As long as you have a college degree, you should be able to substitute teach or qualify for a program that will pay for your courses/certification out of your salary. Good luck!
