Q: Online Paralegal Degree from Keiser University?
I was thinking of getting my Associate of Arts Degree in Paralegal Studies from Keiser University Online. I researched a little and it is regionally accredited and recognized in my state (I live in TN the school campus is in FL). The reason I am wanting to get my degree online is because I'm a stay at home mom of a 2 year old and my husband works, but we don't make enough for us to hire a babysitter for me to go to a regular school. Anyway does anyone know about how long it will take for me to earn my degree through them? When I do get my degree will potential employers not hire me because it is an online degree and not a traditional one? Thanks! I'm not wanting to work from home! I'm wanting to get my degree online and then get a REAL JOB with that! I can't go to a regular school because my husband works but we can't afford a baby sitter if I go to a regular school! Once I get my degree and get a real job we should make plenty to cover a babysitter...

A: This is NOT a good idea. First of all, employers in the field of Law want their employees to have a Bachelors Degree from an ABA-credited university - nothing less. "Online" degrees aren't worth the paper they are even printed on - they are a scam. In the field of Law, potential employers will NOT hire you with an online degree. BUT.....right now, employers won't hire you anyway. Recession. Warning! Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is NOT a good field to invest in!!! Many reasons. Main reason?.....We simply have WAY TOO MANY legal professionals - we have a GLUT. ("Legal professionals" includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc.) But the law schools won't tell you this - law students are easy money for them. The law schools continue to churn out graduates even though they KNOW that the economy is SATURATED. So what this means is that even IF you finish your studies, you're not going to be able to find a job when you are done. Suggestion: Consider and look into the field of Healthcare!!! <<< LOTS of jobs there! and scholarships! The field of Healthcare is hot! I think this direction is going to help you out much better financially. Good luck.

Q: why shouldn't you get an online degree for a paralegal? ?
I am a single mother of twin boys they are about to be four, so its a little hard on time and money. I really have no way to put them into a daycare while I go to school. So I was thinking about an online degree. But I just noticed someone that said "don't get an online degree". Why? Will people not be as likely to hire you? I really need information. Thank you to any one that can offer help. :-)

A: Online STUDY is a good thing - it will take years to get your degree (similar time to attending college). This is good. But if you are talking about a quick and easy fix "get your degree in 2 weeks with free steak knives thrown in" on the internet don't waste a cent on it!! It will be worth less than nothing!

Q: What exactly is a Paralegal? What can i do with an associates or bachelors degree in paralegal studies?
What can i do with an associates or bachelors degree in paralegal studies? What are the primary responsibilitiess of such a position? Is there room for advancement? What is a REALLY quality online program to earn such degrees? And please, no profane nor obscene comments. Let's keep it Holy. Thank you in advance for your professional, poignant and articulate responses. : )

A: As a previous poster said, do not attend an online paralegal program. The only programs worth your time and money are those approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). I did a 2 year associates degree program and found it very, very rewarding. Paralegal job duties vary depending on the size of the firm and the type of law. In small law firms paralegals tend to also bear the duties of a legal secretary, office manager, and sometimes cleaning crew. I once worked for a sole practitioner and had to do everything from cleaning her office, making coffee and answering phones to writing legal briefs and researching case law. In a mid size firm, where there is a legal secretary, the paralegals just work their cases and assist their attorneys. This can include duties such as scheduling appointments/consultations, maintaining attorney calendars, correspondence with clients, performing legal research, drafting pleadings, court filings, case tracking, and much more. However, a paralegal education, even an associates degree, does not qualify nor prepare one to work as a paralegal. Like a previous poster said, many have to start entry level as a clerk or secretary and work their way up. With 2 years law office experience and a 2 year paralegal degree you should be ready to work as a paralegal. If you have any more questions e-mail me.

Q: Are you required to have college credits or a Bachelors degree, before pursing a paralegal certificate?
I see alot of jobs posted online that states that either you need a bachelors degree, or a paralegal certificate. But when I search online for aba approved paralegal certificate programs, most of them say that you need a Bachelors degree or 60 college credits. Thanks

A: From the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most entrants have an associate degree in paralegal studies, or a bachelor’s degree coupled with a certificate in paralegal studies. Check local community colleges or accredited business schools in your area to see if they offer an associates in paralegal studies. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos114.htm

Q: Does having an online degree make a difference in getting a job compared to going to school.?
I am attending Kaplan University and am completing my associates as a paralegal. If anyone knows would it hold me back from getting a good job by having an online only degree?

A: As long as its an accredited institution it makes no difference. I am going to college also and I would say that 95% of my classes so far have been internet classes, any degree I earn isn't going to tell my prospective employer if it was long distance education or in the class room its just going to indicate that I passed and earned my degree. Honestly thats all employers care about, that you have that certificate.

Q: Does employers really hired people who complete their degrees online, such as paralegal or business majors?

A: Only if the individual has a more traditional background as well as the online degree, and if the degree is from a respected institution. Employers always prefer to hire employees who have a strong work record, particularly with experience in the field. With online degrees, this is even more important. If you have no experience, go for the bricks and mortar school.

Q: What does attorneys look for when hiring a newly grad paralegal?
I'm 33 years old and I decided to go back to get my paralegal degree. I live in Illinois and I don't have any experience in this field, but I will be willing to orientate to the position. Should I continue to get my bachelors degree or should I just focus on the paralegal certificate? Are degrees from online programs acceptable for the lawfirms in Illinois? What's the best thing for me to do? Please only serious attorneys or professional within a law firm reply! Thanks..

A: It is very, very difficult to get into a paralegal position with no experience, pretty much impossible. They all want 3+ years experience and a 2 year degree only substitutes for 1 year. I got my associates degree in paralegal studies and for a whole year tried to find a law firm to hire me without any experience...well I couldn't find one. I had to start at a law office as a legal secretary and work my way up the ladder. A certificate from an online program is not worth anything. If you are serious about this then you should get your associates or bachelors in paralegal studies. You can find a list of institutions in your area that are American Bar Association accredited on the ABA's website. Here's the link... http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/paralegals/directory/il.html Non ABA accredited places are no good and potential employers will not be impressed, just as they won't be impressed by a mere certifcate or something from an online program. They want to see that you are dedicated, committed and a hard worker. A simple certificate or something from an online program shows that you are not. My advice to you is to try and get your foot in the door at a law office NOW, start as a legal secretary, receptionist or clerk. Build up law office experience while you go to school. That way, when you graduate you have a degree and law office experience, even though it isn't paralegal experience, it is better than nothing. And while you are finishing school, talk to your employer about the possibility of promotion once you complete your degree. If you plan ahead your transition into the legal field and into a paralegal position won't be too difficult. Best of luck to you!!

Q: Question about online courses offered by online universities?
I am considering going online to get a degree for paralegal studies. Are these online degrees legit, or scam? I am divided..it seems that they might offer something but yet I have a voice in the back of my head that screams scam. Any advice?

A: As long as you obtain your degree from a regionally accredited college it should be recognized by potential employers and other academic institutions. This site has some good information on regionally accredited online paralegal degrees and some colleges to help begin/expand your search: http://www.ecollegefinder.org/online-paralegal-degree-education.aspx I would recommend contacting a number of schools to find the best fit for you and your needs (tuition, schedule, reputation by potential employers). Good Luck!

Q: which of these 2 is a better online college?
I would please like to know which of these 2 colleges will be better to earn an online paralegal degree with. penn foster college or herkimer county community college? thanks...

A: From looking at their websites it is hard to tell, but Penn Foster indicates accreditation on their site and Herkimer does not - at least I couldn't find it on the Herkimer site. Hopefully someone who is familiar with both will respond to your question.

Q: How many years of schooling is needed to become a paralegal?
I am currently a senior in high school, and interested in getting a degree in paralegal. I'm not interested in going to school for more then two years. After some research, I decided to go one year full time to become a secretary and get an idea of what the working environment is like, and then continuing part time to get my degree as a paralegal. The problem is, every school I've found is a four-year college. If anyone has any sites where I could find schools, that'd be excellent. Also, would an online degree be comparative? Thanks so much for your help. : )

A: Don't get an online degree. There are many programs that you can get a degree in (an Associate's Degree) in paralegal studies. Check with your local community college to see if they offer an associate's degree program in paralegal studies. You can also check out the ABA's website of ABA approved paralegal programs here: http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/paralegals/directory/ Just click on your state and find out which ones are available. For example, I clicked on "California" and found some 4-year programs (offering certificates) but also found 2 year programs offering an associate's degree. See: http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/paralegals/directory/ca.html#east Community college is definitely the least expensive way to go! Plus, you can go part-time at night and get a job as a legal secretary by day (that way you'll have an "in" at the firm you work at once you graduate from paralegal school).

Q: what is the best online-degree school? ?
I was looking at the university of phoenix and US career institute and i need to do an online degree with no on-campus classes for a paralegal,if anyone can give me advice?? thanks!!

A: There are tons of online programs. I personally attended American Intercontinental Univ. and Capella University, and I have taught for various online schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Online courses tend to vary in price, so we could say they are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies. The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later. You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!
