I'm going to a community college and will graduate with my associates after the fall 09. I want to transfer to an online college if possible and I'm looking at Western Governors University(wgu.edu). I was wondering if anyone has gotten a degree in accounting (or other business area) online and how their employers looked apon the degree. Was there any trouble getting a job with the degree? Or trasfering to another college for a masters (online or traditional)? I just want to find out if there is any added trouble with getting a job and pursuing a higher education from having gotten a degree from an online degree. I would be especially interested in anyone's experience who has received a degree from WGU.

A: Well it depends what kind of accounting career you're interested in. I'm not familiar with the school mentioned, but if you have hopes of working for any prominent accounting firm you really need to make sure internship and job placement opportunities are made available to you at an AACSB accredited business college. More often than not, entirely online programs do not have this service available so you're being shortchanged. Big firms do their new inexperienced hires exclusively with the schools they have strong relationships with and rarely hire the inexperienced on the outside. On the other hand, if you're content with just working in the back office of a retail store, small bank, that sort of thing, then it likely doesn't matter where you get the degree since you can apply for these jobs directly on the outside.

A: Of the three you list, NYIT Ellis probably has the best reputation. An important consideration to think about - if you plan to take your state's CPA exam, you need to make sure the program you pick is approved for that purpose. some other choices include Excelsior College, City U Seattle, Thomas Edison State, Upper Iowa, Utah State, Columbia (Mo), Eastern Oregon, Emporia State, Indiana Wesleyan, Liberty U, Northeastern U, NW Missouri State, Old Dominion, Saint Mary of the Woods, Southern New Hampshire U., U Hawaii Oahu, UMass, U Wisconsin, ..... Louisiana State has a good selection of online accounting courses but no degree program online. A lot of community colleges have their AS in accounting online. This is a pretty inexpensive option if your local CC is one of them. Just make sure it's accounting and not bookkeeping. Or, you could do your gen ed/core via the CC online and save a few $10Ks that way. Excelsior College has a track in their accounting for the NY CPA. The advantage to Excelsior is that you can take your classes at any school (find the cheapest) and transfer them in.

I am a working mother. I would like to find a online college that is reputable, accredited and offers a degree in Accounting. Due to work restrictions and having a child, I can not attend a on-campus college and believe that online is the route I should go. A: Minot State University - Bottineau offers an online Accounting Technician program. They are an accredited university and they have a physical campus as well as some online programs. Financial aid is available for this program. Since they are located in North Dakota, they have a low tuition rate and the online rate is the same for everyone, regardless of location. A: Its cheaper if you just take online courses from your local community college if you want an Associates in Accounting. A lot of school online are for profit schools, thats why I dont reccomend them.
