Q: Is there a way for me to earn a degree through 'life experience'?
I'm 28, and have been living abroad for five years as a teacher. I have extensive travel under my belt, and am a near fluent speaker of Mandarin Chinese. It's time to go back to the U.S. soon, and I'm weighing my employment options. I just don't want to have to study for four years to get my bachelor's. Is there a university out there that's willing to quantify and validate my life experience as credits towards a degree? FYI, I am strong in the fields of anthropology, K-12 education, linguistics, and psychology; I do a lot of reading and studying on my own. Thanks for your time!

A: Actually, the other posters are both right and wrong. Any university that will simply grant you a degree based on life experience is a diploma mill, and should be avoided. However, some universities, especially those that have decent sized adult programs, will allow you to take some tests to see if the knowledge you have in certain subjects will allow you to waive out of certain classes. In some cases, they will give you college credit. In other cases, they will simply allow you to skip those classes, or take higher levels of that subject with out the introductory prerequisites. These are CLEP exams. A lot of colleges allow you to take these exams. So it's worth it to first research what schools you think you might like, and then to inquire about CLEP. But just to get you started, some colleges that are reputable, and which offer such opportunities include Dominican College, Nyack College, St. Peter's College, San Diego State, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, Bentley College, U Louisville, Central Michigan, California Institute of Tech, Biola, all the Cal States, Pepperdine, and most community colleges. In all, about 3000 universities will accept CLEP credits, so it's worth it, again, to ask the unis you're most interested in. There are other ways to speed your schooling along. Take winter term and summer term classes. Take extra classes each semester. Enroll at a university which has an "accelerated for adults" program, like Bentley or Dominican or St. Peter's or Mercy, which packs more credits into less time. No matter what, make sure the university is both appropriately accredited and well respected.

Q: is there really a life experience degree ?
from an accredited on line college i want to turn my life experience into a degree

A: I don't know about the degree but many colleges will give you credit for life experience, military service, or employment.

Q: Is there a way to get a legitimate college degree from life experience?
I have a lot of college credits from three universities and a lot of professional experience, and four years in the Navy. Is there a school that will tie that together and confer a degree that is readily acceptable?

A: NO. however it may help you get accepted and get transfer credit

Q: What exactly is a 'Life experience degree' ?
anybody hear of something like this ?

A: It's a money-maker. All you do is pay someone so that you can get a piece of paper that "qualifies" you to go out and make money off of someone else by saying that you're a "life coach." Gotta keep the economy going, since we're shipping out all of our jobs to China. P.S. Great cut-and-paste, Cella! THAT'S the way to be an original "top contributor."

Q: are life experience degree awarding universities accredited and accepted world wide by employers?
are life experience degree awarding universities accredited and accepted world wide by employers

A: No, there are no reputable universities that grant degrees based on life experience. These diploma mills operate with legitimate sounding names, hoping that some employers might overlook the fact that they aren't an institution of any kind. They prey upon people who will spend whatever it takes to get a piece of paper that has no meaning behind it (because it was never legitimately earned).

Q: LIfe EXPERIENCE Degree?
Could any one tell me is this Life experience degrees work? If buy a Life experience degree and if I apply for a Job whther it will work. I am with 20 years of work experience in Senior Management level employment but I do not have a degree. at this stage I do not have time to study. But if I get a degree base on my work experience whether it will work to get a new top class job?

A: Yes, you can get a degree based upon life experience but the important thing is that you must have experience PLUS EDUCATION. You can't get it just based upon your work experience. Some are not regionally accredited, but you'll have to decide if you really need that. Stay away from the degree mills, though. Some schools to check out: Almeda University--requires college credit and experience, BOTH. Cannot use for government jobs, grad school entrance, or those needed specialized licenses. NOT regionally accredited. Excelsior College--regionally accredited. Thomas Edison State--regionally accredited.

Q: College Degree Fast, life experience degree?
Anyone been to http://www.college-degree-fast.com i am comparing them and instantdegrees.com, i just want a good degree for accolades, hang it on the wall, i have 25 years business experience. im far too old to go to school, so i thought getting a college degree fast, based on my life experience would be something. let me know if you have had any luck with any of these. also http://www.life-experience-college-degrees.com, seems unique

A: Trust me, you won't get any "accolades" from one of these quickie degrees. Anyone who cares more about your credentials than your actual experience will figure out that it's not the real deal and respect you less for it. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Q: Is Ashwood university's life experience degree,useful&relevant?

A: Only if your future employer is stupid. Ashwood isn't a real college. Their degree is as worthless as one you'd print on your printer, it just costs alot more.

Q: Can "life experience" degrees and credits be transfered to a real college?
If I were to acquire an Associate Degree from one of those online "life experience" degrees, will I be able to sign up for a state college and use those credits to enroll in a 4 year program?

A: No, absolutely not. 'Life experience' degrees are bullshit. They aren't considered legitimate by an accredited university. It's a waste of your money. If you think you have the knowledge to skip some classes (and that's basically what you're saying), find a university that will accept the CLEP tests for credit (many do, especially state universities) and CLEP out of the subjects you already know.

Q: To list degree on resume or not/Life Experience vs Courses taken?
I have taken the majority of the classes needed for a BS in Business Admin/Management. The problem is they were spread out over 4 colleges and universities. And, of course, transferring credits being what it is, you are never given full credit for what you've done at other schools. Anyways, I left school about 5 years ago and went to work in business. Doing Management things and such..much the same thing I was studying in school. Fast forward to today I am interested in changing jobs, but it seems to even get looked at you need that piece of paper that says you have a degree. Between my education and real life experience, I have more than the equivalent of a bachelor degree. But I don't have the paper that says that. Now, I've talked to a couple accredited universities, where upon a portfolio review of my course work and real life experience and a thesis, they will grant me a BS degree based in part on life experience. But I think a lot of people think of Life Experience degrees as shady. Is this worth it? Do I go this way, with the degree being based in part on Life Experience? I don't want to enroll in another university and have to take a lot of the classes I have already taken, or things I have already done. Or how could I list what I have done on my resume, or should I just leave it off totally? And let my experience speak for itself? I just don't life doing that with the market being as competitive as it is.

A: If I where you I would change jobs and just say what you have done.

Q: has anyone ever got a life experience degree and found a good job with it?
what did you get and did you find a good job with it? and how long did it take you to get this degree? what do you think about this kind of degrees? do they work or not? please let me know something about it, i really want to know. thanks

A: Yep, I took it (not a literal class, but actual hitting the pavement-experience) and started my own multi-national marketing firm. Life experience is the best teacher there is. While the other kids were in college screwing around I was out making deals. Now they work for me. Too bad the degree doesn't come in parchment.

I want a bachelor Degree , in less money , quick as possible , but Accredited and Recognized , because i have plan for Masters in future. Thanks to all.

A: There are some schools that have online programs that are accredited. However, none will allow you to get a degree based solely on life experience. If a school does offer a degree using life experience only, it is a sure sign of a diploma mill. However, all is not lost. If you have experience, there are schools that will give SOME credit for work experience. There are also schools that will give credit for industry certifications. Additionally, many schools will give credit for CLEP and DSST exams. You can learn more about CLEP exams at http://http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html You can learn more about DSST exams at http://www.getcollegecredit.com/ Accreditation is important for a degree. You must make certain that the school where you get your degree is accredited. You can check accreditation of a school at http://www.chea.org/search/search.asp Finally, there is a forum where you might be able to find more information on obtaining your degree. http://forums.degreeinfo.com It is free to join and there are many people there who have obtained Bachelor's, Master's and higher degrees through online coursework and study. Good luck

Q: Where can a person obtain a University degree using past life experience to qualify ???
Where can a mature aged person obtain a University Degree using his past life experience to qualify and be accepted ? I understand some Univesities do this , the same as some Universities issue out Honorary Doctorate Degrees.I would like to know if there is any University that can be contacted in Australia,or overseas , who would consider issueing a Degree based strictly on past life experience , in relation to the degree. Thats my question, do you know any University ?

A: How could you prove it, and produce the proper records? Your identify is different from who you were before, so would they have to enroll you under who you used to be.... but when you graduate, your degree would also be in that person's name....I'd start over. New life, new chance. Just do it right this time.

Q: how can i get a regionally accredited ba degree , life experience , in auto-mechanics ?
is this possible ?

A: There are not any true "life experience" degrees that are either legitimate or regionally accredited. Experience is not the same as education and there is no way that experience can be translated to education without some form of validation of learning (testing). Auto mechanics is not a bachelor's degree area of study. Auto mechanics is a trade/technical/vocational area if study. Automotive engineering or design would be bachelor's level. It is possible to apply your life experiences to validating an equivalent education by standardized testing. CLEP, DANTES, ECE, etc... standardized exams can be taken by anyone for credit and thereby validate equivalent learning. The Big Three (Excelsior College, Charter Oak State College, and Thomas Edison State College) are probably the best places to attempt such a thing. http://www.excelsior.edu http://www.cosc.edu http://www.tesc.edu All three are regionally accredited and accept maximum amounts of transfer and examination credit. While it's possible, very few people would be able to test out of an entire degree. Some people are able to test out of significant portions of an associates or bachelor's degree though and then use local classes to fill in the rest of the degree.

Q: Do anyone know a accredited life experience degree website?

A: They really don't exist. The Life Experience degrees that you find on the internet will say that they are accredited, but when you research, the accreditation isn't legitimate. However, there are some good legitimate programs online. Below is a link to a really good college program that is very flexible, and has Regional Accreditation(the best): http://www.cosc.edu
