A: Engineering is the application of science to solve a problem. Technology is the use of science in an object. You can research colleges and universities by name, or by programs of study, or by geographical location, size, or combinations of all etc. The site will provide you with a list of institutions based on your request. It will give you the schools background, accreditation, degree offerings, programs of study, entrance requirements, tuition and fees, athletic programs etc. and a link to each institutions official web page. Make sure the college or university has a regional accreditation (most important). Practice navigating this site. It will be well worth the time and effort.

Q: Online Learning and a degree in Military History?
I am currently working on my BA in Military History but am not sure how applicable it is in the real world. I don't have an interest in teaching, what other career options are available? I'm also doing this through APUS which is a nationally and regionally accredited university but I am wondering if employers look down on online degrees as opposed to "brick and mortar" schools.

A: As for career options, you can continue to go to school and eventually become a professor, which does of course mean some teaching, but can be a mainly research position. Or, you could do what I did (a history major who taught for several years before leaving teaching) - I'm a public historian. I work in the preservationist field. Particularly, I work for a state agency, though there are jobs like this available at country, municipal and national levels, with programs such as local history preservation, museum preservation and the National Register program. As a matter of fact, I work closely with a colleague who received his Master's degree with a concentration in military history - He is my agency's Military History Historian. I don't think that employers are particularly impressed by online graduate degrees. However, if (and this is a big "if") you are interested in Texas history, Sam Houston St. offers an online program that apparently is considered excellent by various state historians. Good luck!

Q: Is anyone studying a Foundation Degree in Teaching & Learning ?
I would like to know what anyone thinks of this course and whether or not they could recommend it ?

A: This sounds like something new, as I have not taken it, but I may be Grandfathered as I have not been told it is a requirement for me. Is it a single class or a set of seminars, I wonder. Sounds interesting.

Q: If you wanted to get a degree in learning a language what would be the best occupation for that?

Q: Will learning sign language help with a degree in special education?
Also, are the requirements for a special education teacher the same for regular techers?

A: I agree with PinkyMoo...her answer is very accurate and detailed. I am a Teacher of the Deaf working in a mainstream regular education setting with special education teachers. When my students move into the district and come into their classroom, they (the sped teachers) panic because they have never learned or experienced sign language...and it leaves them scrambling to learn basic communication. You wouldn't believe how many sped teachers I have worked with say, "I wish I would have taken a basic course". It's always a bonus to learn it, no matter what area of education you're in.

Q: Colleges that offer distance learning or independent study for associate degree?
I'm looking for colleges that offer distance learning or independent study for associate degree. I've been looking but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of any colleges that offer that?

A: There are plenty out there. Your local community college probably has some online courses and programs. Other schools in your state will probably have some. The following are some regionally accredited schools that have online programs and the cost is reasonable. Fort Hays State University – http://www.fhsu.edu/virtualcollege American Public University – http://www.apu.apus.edu/index.htm California State University at Dominquez Hills - http://dominguezonline.csudh.edu/programs.php Make sure any school you attend is accredited by checking at http://www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.asp Good luck

Q: Is Distance Learning really a feasible degree option?
I have looked into getting my Associates via a Distance Learning course through a local community college. I have heard that taking classes through Distance learning requires even more discipline than taking regular classes, but between my job and my child I don't believe I could swing regular classes. Has anyone on here taking Distance Learning courses and is it really more difficult? Any tips?

A: I completed a master's degree on-line. It was not that different from taking a traditional course other than not having a classroom full of students sitting next to you. You do have to make the commitment to discipline yourself, because your work is usually not due to the end of the week and you can let it get by you if you are not careful to schedule and manage your time effectively. After my first class I did realize that I had to set a particular time each evening to help me keep on task with assignments. Trying to complete a week's worth of work the night before is not a good approach whether in a traditional class or on line. I also made everyone in my family aware of this "study time". My time was right after my children went to bed, for 1-2 hours, four days a week. I usually put in more time but I made that commitment to myself and it worked. Due to my experience it has prompted my to create a web portal for the on line teaching community. Some of the contributors to the site will be prospective, current and past on line students. I hope you will use the site to help you achieve your goal to complete your degree. Benae Lambright T.O.T.E. Today's Online Teacher Exchange www.TheLambrightGroup.com

Q: Want a long distance learning or online degree course?
I'm a business man and I do travel a lot but I wish I could be studying along my business. I know I'm ready and smart enough to take the course of my choice but I have very little or no time in my hand. I cannot quit my business for school because all members of my family are depending on me for support. I will love to continue studying as I'm working to support others. I'm very flexible with choice of course. Institution name and contact detail will be appreciated.

A: As mentioned University of Phoenix is very popular and this month if you register by April 19 you get you registration fee waived and free "books" for your first class (they are not paper book, downloaded files normally $70 each) There are many many reputable universities with on line programs now. If you are looking for flexibility try one with no set times for example Kaplan has a particular hour each week that they 'meet' at on line, which can be inconvenient depending on schedule and time zone. I personally went to St Leo on line and found it really good very handy no set meeting times deadlines for assignments are a week long. It was priced about average $250 per credit and it was an accelerated program which means I finished a semester in eight weeks very convenient. Good luck a search of the Internet using on line education and the field you want to study should produce huge results just make sure they are accredited or your degree is essential as good as the paper its printed on.
