Q: Would a criminal justice degree be a good springboard to becoming an Army Officer?
I'm a full time college student majoring in Criminal Justice. I'll graduate with a Bachelors of Science in about 2 years. Would this be a good degree to get accepted into OCS with?

A: I totally agree with Ted M. There is no justice whatsoever in any military service albeit, Army, Airforce, Navy and/or associated services and their Reserves. All to often the History of Military Justice dispensed to its ranker's is a complete and total cover up to protect its higher command officers and families, politicians, government institution, big business corps and umpteen other institutions. Notwithstanding the abuse, bullying, petty discrimination officers and NCO's etc impose on their men/women and ruin their advancement/careers, and are duly allowed to walk away unchallenged! It a wasted degree in the Military + It wouldn't take U too long to realize that even remotely attempting to dispense justice would bring U (on the fast track) into direct conflict with all the above. And they'd use every despicable means to discredit you and force your dishonourable discharge. Thus also branding U for life!

Q: What would be the best degree to get in college to help me advance in criminal justice?
I am going to be a state trooper. I am in my sophmore year in college and i was going to major in criminal justice and I still want to major in that. But I have heard that a criminal justice degree wont help advance that much and that its just a worthless degree. Can some one give me some insight on this. Should I major in something like business insted?

A: 1 – Undergraduate: Political Science or History. 2 – Graduate: Law. But, before listening to me or anyone else on this forum, you should discuss this with the recruiter at your state troopers' headquarters. You might also wish to discuss this issue with the FBI recruiting office, as you'll eventually qualify to work for them as well. And thank you very much for going into such a demanding area of public service. It is people like you that make our country great.

Q: if you have a criminal justice degree, what would be your top 5 list of jobs to have?
Just a question. Doing a research project on prospective jobs for people with criminal justice degrees. I am currently attaining one and would like your opinion.

A: I am not a criminal justice major but I have had two close friends who have earned a degree in the field. One actually does work for law enforcement in Washington D.C., however the other now has a desk job at a mechanical engineering company. Criminal Justice can be a sketchy field since there are such a high number of individuals focused on it. If it is what you're interested in... go for it. I would assume that the majority of criminal justice majors are looking for some work in the legal system, whether it is law enforcement, or court setting. If someone is interested in the field of investigation, I would actually advise majoring in a biological field since most crime scene investigation involves lab work. As I pointed out earlier however, a degree in criminal justice doesn't necessarily gaurantee a job in the legal field. Some one once told me after graduation, one looks at the job market in a different light and can pursue something totally irrelavent to what he or she majored in.

Q: what is better in the long run having a degree in criminal justice or having military experience ?
I want to be a state trooper and i just keep wondering what would be better in the long run military exp specifically coast guard or a 4 year criminal justice degree.

A: Military experience will help you get hired because federal law allows employers to give veterans preference points. However, in the long run, a college degree will be required for promotions.

Q: Criminal justice degree any good for police officers?
I want to be a cop and later a detective, I am getting my EMT-I at a community college, and am in a medical unit in the army. should i get an associates degree in criminal justice? if i get that can i then go back to college and finish a bs in psychology or criminology at a later time? or should i just get the whole four years out of the way with either criminal justice, psychology or criminology? will these help me in getting promoted to detective?

A: Criminology would help you more than psychology! It's a lot easier to get a different job with a criminal justice degree also if you change your mind. You could get on with any federal law enforcmenet (FBI, DEA and so on) with a 4 year in criminology. Get into forensics, become a detective, become a police chief in time. There are A LOT of careers with the bachelors in criminal justice. I am doing the same thing, right now I am working on my associates and later I am going for a bachelors in criminal justice. My best friends dad is a detective with a bachelors degree, he was the assistant chief of police but he stepped down to become a detective again.

Q: Where can I find if a college offers criminal justice?
I want a criminal justice degree but i am not sure where to find if a college has it. I am applying to berkeley, duke, columbia, georgetown, yale, princeton, stanford, cornell, amherst, brown, rice, and harvard. directions?

A: If you are applying for those schools, you should consider checking out their website for criminal justice programs. You might be surprised that not all Ivy League schools offer a criminal justice program. The schools you are mentioning are very good for law school or medicine. As mentioned before, University of Cincinnati is one of the best schools for criminal justice. You should also consider Michigan State University and Temple University. You also have great choices for criminal justice programs online. Schools like university of Cincinnati, Michigan state university, Boston University, and other top-notch schools in the criminal justice field, are offering this great education online. A great source for criminal justice schools, and in fact other schools, is that US news website: http://www.usnews.com Also, this article from the Criminal Justice Online Blog may help you http://criminaljusticeonlineblog.com/archives/2008/10/college-university-accreditation-for-criminal-justice-online/ Good luck to you.

Q: Am I limited to becoming a cop with a Criminal Justice Degree?
I am a criminal Justice major in NYC, and am noticing that the deans and faculty are trying to push all of the students to join the NYPD, instead of seeking a federal job. My heart is really set, however, on a federal job like the ATF, Secret Service, or FBI, but i hear they are very selective and hard to get in. Do most Criminal Justice majors simply become police officers, or do many move on to Federal jobs, or private security?

A: If you are truly empassioned, consider law school with a concentration in criminal law. That will remove much of your competition immediately. I wouldn't suggest this unless you are within the elite. [By elite, I mean acedemic elite, not physical elite]. Although it will mean another three years of hard work & serious competition--if you have the drive, acedemic ability, and a flawless criminal history, you could do yourself (and the country) a real favor.

Q: So i have seen and heard alot of people say a Criminal justice degree(BS level) is worthless. I do not want to
become a cop, but i would love to do something in the criminal justice field, but are my options limited? why are people saying a cj degree is worthless?

A: There are many options: corrections officer (adult and youth), social worker in criminology (might need an MSW), researcher or analyst (if you have enough statistics), security management, Homeland Security (such as customs, INS), state police (called different things). There are lots of opportunities--don't know why anyone would say that. Good internships are key to being successful though.

Q: Should I do criminal justice or Police foundations to become an cop?
Hi, I am wondering if I should do Police foundations or get a 4 year criminal justice degree to become a cop? What are the best criminal justice schools in Canada? Thanks,,,

A: In ontario the colleges that offer police foundations have transfer agreements with universities to get your honours bachelor of criminology/law and justice/forensics/etc ex: say you want to be in forensic science 2 years police foundations, then after that you go to the university for 3 years to get your honours bachelor of forensic science.

Q: What kinds of criminal justice jobs don't need physical strength?
I'm not in bad shape, but I'm in my late 30s and am getting a criminal justice degree in a year and a half. I was hoping to be a corrections officer, but I'm noticing that a lot of places you need to apply before your 37th birthday, and that will cut me out by the time I finish school. I don't want to work in a boring office all day. Maybe a probation officer? A bailiff? Um, not meter maid, okay... I got hired for that right out of high school (but didn't take the job.) Something I can do with a university degree. :P

A: There are clerical jobs in law enforcement that aren't very physically demanding. I don't remember what its called, but you can settle disputes between inmates and guards and investigate lawsuits by inmates. If you have any other mechanical skills you could teach in a prison, food service, prison clergy, run AA meetings, etc. Almost anything you can do on the "outside" is usually needed on the "inside".
