Q: I graduating with my Associates degree. Am I expected to throw a party for the attending guests?
I mean it's just an associates degree. I understand that I'll probably have to throw one for my bachelors but I don't really want to hang out with my family. What am I supposed to do?

A: Throwing Parties is always optional. It is much better to skip doing one than be a bad host. But a world from the wise, it's never too early to cultivate a network, it gets much harder to make connections when you are done with college. Parties are a fun and easy way to stay connected with people you may need later. Consider throwing a lunch party, with a sandwhich tray & a few sides at least. Do e-vites and set the time from 11 - 2 pm. Don't forget to invite any close professors and classmates you studied with. In the years to come you may go back to the same people for references or to inquire about jobs. Good luck.

Q: What universities offer the associates degree in nursing?
I want to pursue a career as an RN. I wanted to attend a university (not a community college). I will be going for my associates degree. What are some colleges that offer this degree?

A: In Texas there are 5 universities that offer an ADN degree. If you check with the Board of Nursing in your state, or any state, they can tell you which approved ADN programs are offered at universities. Most university nursing programs provide BSN programs, and the ADN programs are generally offered by colleges and junior or community colleges. Even most 4 year colleges offer the BSN.

Q: should I get an associates degree in IT to help my communications degree?
My situation is that I graduated four years ago with a degree in broadcasting and electronic media. Sadly, thanks to new automation and other downsizing, I haven't landed a good job. I am still interested in media but notice how IT/Computer skills tend to apply better and also have demand in other industries as well. I'm thinking of going back to get an associates so I can land a better paying job.

A: Having a second degree in IT will be of tremendous benefit to you. As you are aware, IT permeates every part of our private and working life, and the more you know about its application, the better off you are. For example, my first degree is in CS and I have had a lot of work experience in programming and developing databases in SQL Server and MS Access, however, due to the downturn in the IT industry a few years ago, I decided that I would get myself another degree in civil engineering ( I am now completing that and working as an engineering technologist). I discovered that in my work, which is full of engineers but no real support from the IT department, I have suddenly become the IT guru again and alongside my engineering work, I develop databases for our engineers, or correct those databases that were developed by those who had no idea what they were doing. As you can see, I am suddenly finding myself developing and maintaining skills in two unrelated areas, but the skill in IT is highly applicable in my work and in just about any other profession that works with data. In conclusion, I would suggest that an associates, or possibly even a Masters in IT would be a huge benefit to you in securing your future. By the way, you do not have to have a bachelors in IT to go on to a masters in that field. If you are missing some prerequisites for the masters, you can do those prior to commencing the masters. I would recommend further studies in IT with areas of specialization of either networking or database development or administration. I wish you all the best for the future.

I'm in a community college right now (can't afford a regular university) and wondered what I could do what an associates degree in behavioral science? Getting a bachelors may NOT be an option.

A: You cannot do anything with it, in these types of subject areas you need atleast a Masters to find work.

Q: What is an associates and a bachelor degree?
How many credit hours do you have to complete to finish your associates degree? Also what is the maximum credit hours you can take in one semester? And do you need a masters to be a teacher?

A: An associates is usually 60 credit hours and usually takes two years to attain. It all depends on if you know what you want to do or not, though. You just have to make sure you take all the prerequisites and classes for your major/minor. A bachelors is usually 120 (more for engineering and some degrees) and usually takes around 4 years, thought it could take less or more, depends on knowing what you want to major in again too. I think the maximum credit hours for most schools is 21 credits, but you can go over by getting a waver. Usually most people take 15 or 16, that's how many I usually took. I don't think you need a masters degree to teach the lower grades (i.e. kindergarden/elementary) but I think you do to teach middle and high school. Hope that helps!

Q: Does having at least an Associates degree look better to clients when owning a small business?
I was laid off from my job as an office manager for a construction company. If I open my own clerical service business, would it look better to clients if I had a degree? I've already started my Associates but haven't finished. Thanks for the advice.

A: While I would never discourage anyone from getting a degree, I don't think that would be a something that most clients would take into consideration when deciding whether or not to use your business. They are going to look at your experience, customer service, professionalism, and results. That being said, you may find some of the college courses useful to you in running your own business, especially any business courses.

Q: Can i become an assistant buyer with only a Associates degree?
I am currently attending school, majoring in fashion marketing/merchandising.I am getting my associate of sciences degree, and people have been telling me that to become a buyer you need a bachelors degree. I was wondering with an associates degree and 2 years sales experiences in retail and an internship can i become an assistant buyer?

A: It may be difficult but if you tell or proove to them that you are going to pursue your bachelors degree someone will bite. Especially if you present yourself well. Write a letter of introduction to a purchasing manager. You will get a call but you must go after more than one.

Q: How much money does it cost to earn an associates degree?
How much would it cost to get an associates degree? I know there is student loans but that will cost money too in the long run right, to pay off all those loans.

A: To get an associates degree, the cost varies upon state and school. Is it a private college or isit funded by the state or federal government. In CA. when I got my AA at a state run community college the cost was $13.00 a unit. But a few years later it was $11.00 a unit. most AA degrees are between 36 and 42 units approx. There are federal grants and loans available. The FASFA is a federal grant/loan option (which I highly reccommend) you can find them online. I can't remember what the accronym stands for but that was how I paid for more education. Not only my AA but my BA as well. There are also Pell Grants and other funds available. Some programs you will have to pay back. Those are usually loans. But you usally don't have to worry about paying those back for up to 6 months or more. And typically the monthly payments depend on the amount of the loans. I only had $5,000 to repay after receiving my BA, and I went to a private college. I would encourage you to go to the financial aid office of the school(s) you are considering attending and ask them about any and all programs they have. They will be more than willing to help you, I promise. Make sure that the school(s) you look into are accrediated (approved by a governing body that make sure their curriculum is up to scratch) if they are not then all of your hard work might be for nothing and you will wind up with nothing. That includes the AA or BA degree, transferable credits to other institutions, and the waste of valuable money and time, because you may have to start completely over. Also make sure that the college has the type of degree or emphasis that you are looking for or again you will be wasting your time. Go in and talk with an academic advisor and get an idea of what their college can offer. I hope this helps, good luck.

Q: What jobs can you get with an associates degree?
I am getting my associates degree in June and In July/August, I will have my EMT license. EMT's make diddly squat, so I am wondering what else can I do? I get married in August and my husband and I want to have kids within 3 years of getting married. Also getting a bachelors degree is too costly. Luckly my hubby to be has a good job, but what can I do?

A: It depends on what your associate degree is in. An associate degree in nursing is a RN and they make within a dollar or so of a bachelor's degree RN. So it really depends what you have a degree in. If it's a general studies degree and you have a lot of communications type credits you may be able to get a manager type role at a fast food or small restaurant place. That type of job would make a bit more than an EMT-B

Q: Does anyone know the difference between an associates degree and certification?
I know that with an Associates Degree you have to take more classes, but what I am wondering is if I get an A.S. Degree how much more money will I be making?

A: It all depends on the degree or the certification. I would guess degree will generally get more money than a certification, though there are some tough certifications that will net you a nice income. Check out the following link from the US Census data.
