Q: For Accountants: Does it really matter where you get your Accounting degree?
I am considering two different programs for a Masters in accounting: one is a top notch program (one of the top five) and the other is a run-of-the-mill type program. The really good program would entail me getting into debt (about 71K, including student loans and personal loans); whereas the average program would run more like 12K. Somebody told me that it really does not matter enough to make it worth the additional debt. He indicated that, once I had my CPA license, few would care enough about where I received my degree to justify the expense. I would appreciate any feedback whatsoever. Thanks

A: An accounting degree isn't the ticket to a higher salary, if you want a higher salary, work and prove yourself first. The degree may or may not help you, relevant experience still counts a lot. Look at advertisements offered by banks and check out what requirements they look for. Try to meet those requirements if you want to get a chance into the interview room.

Q: A history degree to an accounting degree?
I have an Bachelor of Arts in History and now want to earn a Bachelor's in Accounting. I did not take any business classes when I got my history degree. Will I have to take a bunch of business classes in addition to the accounting classes? I know my general courses should count, but will I have an enormous amont of classes I still have to take?

A: You will have to take the core curriculum for the business school which will include some courses in Business Law, Management, Communications, Marketing, Finance, and Statistics. This is not that much and consider that the payoff financially is better with the business degree, at least in the short term.

A: Finance. A finance professor once said that when an economist is standing in the unemployment line, at least he knows why he's there.

A: Hmm, I thought that people in Computer Information Systems made a lot of money. Maybe you just need to get a better job. If you are unhappy with your current salary, I would recommend applying elsewhere and negotiate for a higher salary. If you need to have a paycheck, try to lock in the other job before quitting your current job. I have a degree in accounting and I am eligible for a CPA. But I doubt that I have that much more money than you. You spent a lot of time in school, there's no need to spend any more time in a classroom than absolutely necessary.

Q: Will a bankruptcy affect an accounting degree ?
Meaning, if i have an accounting degree will the fact that i had filed a bankruptcy a few years ago make it difficult for me to land a decent job ? This goes with accounting clerk or any type of accounting job ?

A: If you'd be handling money or had the opportunity to re-direct funds or embezzle (which is the case with many accounting jobs), a bankruptcy on your record would make getting a job more difficult. It's a red flag to employers that indicates you may not be able to be trusted to exercise good judgment in the area of finance. Having said that, however, a lot depends on the circumstances. If you had to declare bankruptcy because you got in over your head with credit cards and car loans or whatever, that's not good. But if you had to declare bankruptcy because all your money went to paying doctor bills for your terminally ill mother, that's different.

A: Business is not wanted because too many people go into business. It is the fall back major for many individuals. The same goes for accounting. There are A LOT of accounting majors. If it is something you like and really enjoy doing, I suggest that you get your Masters of Accountancy and get your CPA. You will get a mediocre job with just a BS in Accounting. Literally, droves of people graduate with business, finance, and accounting. That is unlike professions like nursing and engineering. A 4-year degree in a science and technology profession is sufficient to get a high paying job. It's all about supply and demand. Starting salaries for engineering majors are the highest of any 4 year degree and nurses get huge bonuses because they are in demand. Back around 2002, there was a huge desire for qualified accountants because of Sarbanes-Oxley regulations, but since then (6 years), hundreds of thousands of people have gotten an accounting degree and consequentially, starting salaries have diminished.

A: These sites are for the Chartered Accountants of Canada and they set the regulations and standards regarding CA's. Although you may be able to use some of your US degree credits here you will still have to qualify and can't simply transfer from the US our laws and financial system etc are completely different. A: Marketing degree: It'll be hard to find jobs, you're position is likely to be eliminated when markets go sour, and your earning potential is average. Accounting degree: It's easy to find jobs, your education and experience is always in high demand, and your earning potential is very high (if you get good grades, get your CPA and get audit experience).

A: Cal State Long Beach offers a great and affordable education. Their business program is highly impacted though and from what I understand they've recently raised the bar to get into it. Ideally, go for the best school you can afford to get into. Something like USC if you can swing the financing part. Graduating from a top school like USC opens many doors, specifically its a great way to get into one of the big 4 accounting firms. Education like that pays for itself a hundred times over.

i have completed 2 years at a private university in MN and i am looking to transfer to a nice college in California where i can get a business accounting or finance undergrad degree. It needs to be less than $20,000 for out-of-state tuition and i have a 2.9 gpa right now.

A: Even if you apply to a top CSU you need to get your GPA a lot higher. Cal poly slo, sdsu, chico, pomona, long beach are some of the better CSUs. As for UCs, all are great besides UCR. I know SDSU is a very popular choice for people because of its location and business program. It's nationally ranked. But most UCs and CSUs are great. Just make sure to do some research. And as far as tuition, and if that's a concern, defintely apply to a CSU because they are cheaper. I go to SDSU and my tuition is $18,000 and I'm a California resident. Im not sure you will find much luck finding a university out of state tuition under 20K. Try moving to cali and going to a JC for 2 years.

Q: What R the advantages/disadvantages of getting an accounting degree?Need help 2 know if this is for me or not?
I am considering this degree because i like math but i need to know a little bit about it before going in it blindly. I have 75 semesters hours towards my Education degree but i just realized that i no longer want to teach. I'm trying not to do this again so I am researching it first. Thanks a lot. A: So many time we start something and then we realize it is not what we want. Let me ask you a few questions: Is working with numbers fun for you? Do you like to help people? If someone is upset can you keep a cool head? Do you like to solve puzzles? Are you a good communicator? If you answered "yes" to all these questions then I would say to go for that accounting degree. But if you answered "no" to one or more, then you had better keep looking. Accounting is a great profession, everyone needs an accountant and the wages are usually high. If you have a "passion" for numbers and have an analytical mind then this is the job for you. If you like numbers but aren't sure you really love them and get a natural high working with them you can still be an accountant, but why not find something you have a "passion" for and have fun going to work everyday instead of going to a job. :-(

I have a 2 year accounting degree from a community college, plus a four year business degree from UCF, how does that measure up to a person with a 4 year accounting degree?

A: I presume you don't intend to become a CPA? If you just want an accounting position (like a staff accountant), your four-year business degree should be fine. You can include relevant course work on your resume, letting companies know what accounting courses you took.
