Q: How reliable are home study courses?
After 3 years in an agricultural college, i am looking to broaden my horizons & aim to study a Higher Education course in Animal Management/Welfare. I am curious to know whether courses recommended by home study groups, such as the OCN (Open College Network) are reliable & do you gain recognised qualifications? Is it likely to cost more than a general college course in the same field, due to external correspondence etc? Thanks for your answers. I will take a look at the listings.

A: it's always hard when thinking about correspondance courses to know if they are nationally recognised. Have a look at the site below, a database of all nationally recognised qualifications [UK] so should give you some help. If you type in animal managemenr it will list all courses available matching or similar. OCN is a recognised exam board, certainly they offer a wide variety of courses that may suit your needs.

A: Honestly the best thing to do is go to an actual school to study in that career field

I want to get into a career in animal management, but haven't got the time to study at a college because of my job. Would an advanced diploma from the national home study college be as good as say a diploma from Sparsholt. Would any employer actually except qualifications from home study courses?

A: If you are enrolled in a college that offers on-line courses, financial aid should help. Although, financial aid is for the needy only. Meaning, if you are poor. Ok so what does everyone think about online courses and home study courses? A rip off?... Or something good? I need everybodys opinion on this please! :D

A: It depends on who provides them, the subject, the cost and what you get out of it. I think that online courses from reputable insitutions such as Columbia University can be very beneficial. For example, writing courses are perfect online courses, because there is no need to be in a classroom with others to learn about writing techniques. However, I don't think an online science course or an online public speaking course would provide you with the skills you need. Many excellent universities now provide online courses and online programs. Here is a list of the top online MBA programs in the world: http://www.macquil.com/articles/onlinemba.php. The Massachussetts Institute of Technology is currently offering free "online courses" (syllabus, lectures, resources, etc), but it doesn't offer any type of certificate, diploma or degree. Type "MIT online" on any search engine and you wil find this.

Q: Hubby wants to become a motorcycle electrician-are there any home courses he can do?
He needs a home study course, preferably on-line, to become a qualified motorcycle electrician. We have a trike he can woork on if he needs to practice! His job's irregular hours means evening classes are out of the question. Mechanics are easy to fidn, but there is a sever shortage of electrical engineers for motorbike. Any/all suggestions welcome. A: The school where i did my class1 also offered CPC training. I remember my instructor telling me the best way to do it was to study the material at home because there is just so much of it. I think if i were to do it myself i'd study the material at home then go do a training course. I know that'd be more expensive, but you might as well learn from people who know what they're talking about. Have a look at their website, the people who work there are really good, i'd reccomend them to anyone.

i really want to do a home course with ics or open university or something but its really expensive and i dont earn that much is there a grant or something to help with the costs??

A: I know you can get funding for Open University, not sure about the other one. Contact OU and they will let you know what to do.

A: Well, I don't know about home course but you can go online at www.fafsa.ed.gov fill out the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid. It will guide you with the information that you need. You may want to have your tax info ready when you are filling the application. If you qualify for free grants it will tell you or u can just get student loan.

Hi I am looking to do the CeMAP (Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice course) from home I know that it costs alot of money and I can not afford to pay alot upfront so does anyone Know where I can find it on a pay monthly basis.

A: No, the only thing you can do is maybe put it on a credit card and then pay them off when you qualify and get a job? It will be worth doing it this way. If you knuckle down you can pass all three in 3 months (my husband just passed his module 2 this morning as it happens!) It took me a year but I have 3 kids, am self employed and little time to revise! Best of luck.... Oh and each exam costs £120 and you get your study/reference file for this too - you can buy extra add on's such as cd's etc, but you don't need them if you get your head stuck in and learn it all.
