Q: If i go and take an accounting course, can i take the CPA test?
Well, im just 15 and don't need it right now but i think it would be really cool! I have been investing in the stock market sense i was 13 and really love dealing with money. I want to be a CFO some day, and just trying to do what i need to do to get there. So can i take it at my age? Or do i need to be 18, 21 or something like that?
A: To take the CPA exam, most states require you to have a 4 year college degree that includes specific courses. Besides, taking one accounting class would not prepare you for the CPA exam. The CPA exam covers auditing, tax, financial statements, business law, cost accounting, and more.
Q: While taking a course in Accounting. What did most accountants use before they had computers and Excel?
I want to do accounting the old way. I was wondering what they used to keep records. What did they buy in the way of paper, books, ledgers.
A: I am a practicing CPA (Certified Public Accountant). I graduated from college with an accounting degree in 1974.
First I need to clarify "Excel". Excel is not used by accountants to keep books. We still use journals and ledgers, just computerized. Excel is primarily a tool for analysis.
When I was in college, each level of accounting: "Introduction", "Intermediate" and "Advanced" had a section called the "practice set". A practice set was a simple set of books comprised of journals, ledgers, and financial statements. The financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, and others) are considered the end product whether using a manual set of books or a computer.
In 1973 I took a course in computer technology. As part of the course they took us to see the university's computer. It was behind a glass wall for viewing. There were several people on the other side maintaining the various tapes, etc. It was very large and filled a room about 20X40 feet. It was the only computer at the university.
When I started work we used journal and ledger sheets. Journals were for recording individual entries. There were journals for accounts receivable, accounts payable, general journal entries, sales, expense, fixed asset, etc. Totals from the journals were tranferred to the ledger sheets. Each ledger sheet contained the information for one individual account: cash, accounts receivable, fixed assets, accounts payable, notes payable, equity accounts, etc.
Keeping books in a manual journal and ledger system is extremely tedious and time consuming. Today we use computers that keep the same ledgers and journals, just automated. Most people believe you can buy a computer and accounting software package and you can do it yourself. However if you don't understand basic accounting and the finished product - balance sheet and profit and loss statement, you will just make a mess.
On with my history lesson. In about 1976 we starting entering information on input sheets that were sent to an outside computer center (think big IBM mainframes). There the data was input to automate the posting to computerized journals and ledgers. Same process just automated and much faster.
About 1984 we purchased our first in house computer. I don't remember the brand but it used an operating system called CPM (I think that was the aconym). Now we did all data entry on our own computer directly from the original source document.
About 1985 we purchased what are now known as PCs. The operated using MS-DOS. Over the years we have continued to upgrade our computers and now use Windows XP. I suppose Windows Vista is next.
I realize this is a rather long answer, but to understand accounting really does take four years of college and a few years of experience. I commend you for taking an accounting course and would hope you would continue and earn a degree. I have been doing accounting for 34 years and I still find it interesting.
Hope this helps.

Q: How long is an accounting course in the philippines?
??
A: 4 years..that is a bachelor's degree.
Q: I'm looking to take an accounting course online to earn some sort of certificate?
Would anyone know of a good accredited school to choose? I've spoke with University of Phoenix, and their saying it will take 2 to 3 years. I'm trying to get this done in months.
A: Here is a review site that might be worth checking out.
http://www.onlinedegreereviews.org
I would avoid UOP due to the cost. A certificate program is usually one year, so 9 months isn't out of the question
I have to disagree with the above poster on Ashworth / PCDI. It is not regionally accredited.
Q: which accounting course would be the best to do to become an accountant without wasteing time ?
i have no previous experience or qualifications on this area but also have no time to waste some people have recomanded me aat but some others acca i need to do something that will give me qualification that will be exempted in major accounting bodies without haveing to do further studies hope i have been clear and hope to get a good advice thank you
A: You can't be a professional accountant without taking the professional exams. There are no short-cuts.
Various universities have degrees that are accredited by the major professional bodies: CIMA, ACCA, etc.
Most professional qualifications are designed to be taken part time, by people working in the profession - it will never be quick. Get in touch with each body to find out the various routes through their qualifications.
You also need to seriously and objectively assess you intellectual capability. This will enable you to select the qualification at the right level. The scale is something like this: AAT (lowest), then ACCA / CIMA, with ICAEW highest. Difficulty is linked to level.
Q: I am taking an accounting course and need some info.Does anyone know where I can go to get some info?
A: Assuming you are needing general info you can try the book store or library. Both very good sources for information.
Q: after my accounting undergraduate course, how long should i work before going to a business school?
or should i go straight after my undergraduate course
A: it all depends where u go. if u go for corporate acct frims den do ur CA first and then think about masters. if your goin into a role that is different then, doin a masters p/t can help.
