Q: What US Military branch is best for a full time university student?
I want to join the military, but go to school at the SAME TIME. The benefits will really help me as well as for the fact that I want to serve our country. Im a woman in her first year at a private university. Please let me know which one would let me study and serve at the same time, as well as help me pay for my education. Thanks!

A: Just be aware that your education is not guaranteed..And it also depends on what your job will be in the military. I would choose the Air Force..and I would stay clear of the USMC..

Q: what's a better choice for a university student- windows vista business or windows vista home premium?
im a final year university student and want to buy myself a laptop, and was wondering which is a better choice? this is the only choice i have and i have no idea what the difference is. i may end up loading software such as matlab onto it.. but i doubt the version of vista should make a difference? thanks

A: Ubuntu linux. Why? It's free. Save yourself some money. Matlab runs on it too.

Q: What books would you recommend for a first year university student?
I'm moving out for university in a couple months, and I was wondering if anyone had any good advice books that helped then and/or that they would recommend? I know my textbooks, and have them already... I'm just looking for advice type-books.

A: Advice type books will not help you at all. Books on "how to study" won't help you, either. The best thing to do is to talk to students who have been at the school. Your instructors will know who to send you to, especially if they have had the students in your class. The best thing that you can do for yourself would be to establish an open communication path with your instructors. My wife and I recently went back to school after about 10 years of working, and we have found that communicating with our instructors is one of the best things we could have done. While most people piss and moan because they don't do well on tests, then pout about it for weeks, we go to our instructors to see why we missed questions. Don't rely on books to tell you how to interact at college, or how to learn. You will develope your own study habits and interpersonal skills at college. It will take a couple of years to fully develop a routine that you are comfortable with because each course you take in your general education will affect the way you do both. Good luck. If you need anymore advice, email me and I will do what I can for you.

Q: What would you say is the best place to live in California for a university student?
First of all, I want to major in History so that I can then go to law school. Right now I am at a community college in Texas doing my basics. I want to go to California for college but I don't know what city or university. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'd like to be farther to the south. Around Pomona or San Diego but I want to know want are the best places to live in that are big cities. I don't want any more suburbs. Thanks so much!

A: Orange County is the best way to go because its in between San Diego and L.A its not that congested either. There are a few schools out here as well which is University of Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Long beach just call the schools and do research on them to see if its right for you.

Q: What are some good laptops/laptop specs for a new university student?
I'll be enterring university come September, and I was wondering if anyone had any siggestions, on what kind of laptop I should get for it. I know I'll be getting a 12 Cell Battery, but there are lots more specifics out there. Also, I'm debating a Tablet Laptop. Tips?

A: It all depends on what money you have available and of that, what you are willing to spend. You definitely need at least a 250 GB HD with 2 Gb RAM, and depending on what you plan on majoring in you'll also need to evaluate graphics and media cards. Some of my favorite models of laptops are Dell XPS 1530 and the brand new Gateway MC Series, both have the power to do about anything and the memory you need! Do some research on the models given, they are both reliable, and find something that suits you and your college needs.

Q: How do I live a balanced life as a university student?
I have a busy life because I study a lot and I am going for a masters degree so I won't graduate for quite a while. I realize that I have to spend a lot of time studying but I do not want to define myself as a student and spend my youth studying every minute of the day. I need a something like a hobby or something to stay sane and to develop myself as a person outside of being a student. How can I do this? thanks:)

A: Extra-curricular activities/clubs. On campus, tons of things are usually going on...get involved in them. You can pursue hobbies of interest or things that correspond with your studies. Also in a university town there are usually plenty of opportunities to volunteer. Being of service to others can be fulfilling, fun & a learning experience all in one. Church & community organizations also offer options. You can be very balanced...just do things you enjoy. Try new things. You ARE on the way to a masters...you can figure it out!

Q: Which cities in US are most suitable for a university student to both live and get education at the same time?
I'm currently 18 years old and this is my senior year in college now. I'll graduate at June 2009 and I plan to go to US for my university life. I'll start to make my applications soon but I'm not sure which cities I should choose because the city is as important as the university in my opinion. Which cities should I consider?

A: The best one I can think of right off the top of my head is Boston

Q: ways of making money for a university student?
i was wondering is any one new any interesting ways i can make money. im in university so i dont have the most time in the world. and welll...everyone can get a part time joband make minimum wage. i want to find somthing btr. i was thinking about buying a vending machine and setting in a highschool, however i think that would put me ina loss for a couple of yrs. does any oen else know any good ways of making som money?

A: If there is a particular subject area in which you do well, you might consider tutoring a high school student or even another university student. It's not a lot of money usually, but you can fit this easily into your schedule, and also have some good experience you could probably add to your resume later.

Q: Can a University Student still NOT know what they want to major in? But still go to a University?
Like can a person still be in at a University and not know what they want to do yet?

A: yep, it's called undecided. However, I would try to figure it out as quickly as possible and stick to it. Many majors have different prerequisite classes, so make sure you take basics like Biology or Calculus not Intro in Biology or Mathematics 1. Be careful of majors like history, psycology, criminal justice, english. This can be hard to find jobs in without a master's. Figure out the job you want and work backwards to what schooling you need. Goes much faster that way.

Q: Do I need to take TOEFL test to apply to Canadian university even though I am university student in Australia?
I am from Iran and migrated to Australia. English is not my language even though I am studying in the university there. I didn't take any TOEL tests. Now I want to apply for university in Canada. Do I need to have TOEF test prior to my acceptance in university there?

A: If you graduated from university in Australia and are now applying to another program - submitting your Australian grades as part of your application - then you do not need to take the TOEFL. However, if you simply took a few courses in Australia but did not complete the course of stufy (i.e. if you will be submitting grades from another, non-English institution as part of your application package), then you will need to take the TOEFL. Check the admissions website of the particular university that you are applying to, as regulations vary.

Q: Can anyone describe the life of a university student president in just 6 word?
Describe the life of a university student president in just 6 word. eg " I played I prayed I failed". it should be meaningful. any trail is all good.

A: The best lead, the rest follow!

Q: Can I still sponsor if I am now a university student? Canada to Costa Rica?
I am sponsoring him to Canada From Costa Rica.....I need to know...we are already in the process, waiting for the results from the fingerprints. During this time, I decided I could no longer hold off on my desire to attend university. I am wondering and hoping this won't cause trouble of some kind and negatively affect our case. Does anyone have any concrete evidence/answer?

A: well as a sponsor you are financially responsible for him for over 2 years after he arrives, they may say that you are unable to support him while a student/while not making enough money to support him

Q: What is the best shorthand for a university student trying to keep up?
I am at university, and want to know what shorthand would be best to keep up with my lecturers speaking. please respond with a name, i.e. Pitmans shorthand etc

A: don't try to put down every word, take down the essence of what is said. Makes much more sense and you don't need shorthand. I never needed shorthand at university. Whenever there was a list of things we needed to write down the lecturer gave us time to do this. If everybody has a problem with a certain lecturer, ask the lecturer to slow down. If you are the only one, check what the others in your class are doing. Or you can always take a small tape recorder along and record the lecture. It's also pretty normal that a lecturer put up his powerpoint lecture as a pdf file for a class. If he doesn't and it would be appropriate, ask.

Q: Is microsoft Student really worth it, for a University Student .. or is it more for High School Kids?
I need to know if Microsoft Student (with Encarta) is useful for a University Student, bearing in mind I already have the normal Microsoft office suite.

A: No the only thing you would be getting is encarta since you already have the rest. Even that's not a big deal with the rise of wikipedia, encarta is being left behind because they do not have the freedom to update and revise like wikipedia does. You would be better off just buying encarta by itself, if you were set on it (you would also get more content). Student releases are lacking in certain ways (most of the time) that's part of the reason it is cheaper. Also what do you mean the "normal office suite" there are like 10 different versions now including vista's and XP which do you have?

Q: How would a university student best start a small retail business with next to no money?
19 year old from Brisbane, studying part-time. How do I do it?

A: Depends entirely on what you plan to sell. If its something that can be sold from home, this could be a cheap way of starting out. Alternatively, once you have a solid business plan, you may want to start out talking to big companies that produce complimentary goods to help you out. For example, if you are planning to sell cds, you could contact CD player manufacturers to get them to provide the stereos in your store - they may be willing to do this as long as they can put their logo in your store. You can get help from comapnies like mastercard and visa for things like store awnings - they pay for the awning with your store logo, as long as the mastercard/visa logo also gets on there. You may also want to start out small - maybe find a local market. Stalls are cheaper than stalls and could be a great way for starting out and getting your name out there. Once you start doing well enough you can let your regulars know you're moving to a store.
