Q: writing a formal letter of withdrawal from a magnet school ?
i need some help writing a formal letter to withdraw myself from it. is it fine the way it is? does it even make sense? The school just told me that i need something written on paper telling and confirming that i am not attending the school. Here it is so far and also, its suppose to be my mother writing it but i am instead -.-;; : This is to inform you that my daughter, ---------, is withdrawing from the Magnet Program of -------high school. She is unable to attend this school because we moved out of state. Accordingly, this correspondence is in compliance with your requirement of a formal withdrawal. Should you have further requirements, please advise. Sincerely, _________

A: It is a good letter and I am glad that you indicated that it was written at their request./

Q: What is the best magnet school in the Baltimore area?
I just got in to this school and I'm wondering if it's not a really bad school.

A: Well if you got into a magnet school , thats great..Next, hope its not a English/Writing school, because you should have learned the 2 negative rule before getting in.........county/city?

Q: Can I still attend a magnet school if I moved out of the district?
I used to live in LA but I recently moved out of the LAUSD district. I still want to stay at my high school, and my parents can drive me to school everyday (instead of taking the bus, which I did back in LA). Can I still stay in my high school?

A: You probably will not be able to remain as soon as the school finds out your new address.

Q: can a white child be denied from a magnet school?
Can the school district deny a white child admission to a magnet school, because the vacancies at the school had been reserved for minority children only?

A: Yes, they can. Magnet shools are funded by mandated state school integration funding. They have race quotas. Because we lived in an area that was primarily minority, my son had no problem getting in (we are white). On the other hand, if the school has vacancies due to too few minority applicants, a white child would be eligible to take the vacant seat.

Q: What is the difference between a magnet school and a charter school?

Q: Does going to a Magnet school help trying to get into college?
Will it look better or if oyu have a lower GPA by a bit will it be okay? What does it tell the college.

A: It really depends - while colleges appreciate you making an extra effort, if you get C's or low B's, that might just be proving to them that you are not ready for college level work. Unless of course, you have other things to make up for it ... basically, the university is going to look at your grades and where you ranked in your high school, your SAT scores and if you took college level classes. Extracaricular stuff is nice if it looks like you really did something - not just attend meetings so you could list 10 activities. THere is no set answer as each college is different but basically, it's okay not get all A's if your SAT scores are really, really high if you're planning on a top level prestigious school ... but you better explain why ...

Q: whats the difference between a magnet school and a public school? In general, what is a magnet school?
I've looked on wikipedia and I don't really understand what it means. I've looked on google and all that, I really just can't figure it out.

A: magnet school is a system or program withhin a publuc school. they are a program mainly for people interested in a track for arts, architecture, etc, special classes. its really stupid because you dont get to pick the classes you want to take or the teachers and its not useful for ANYTHING. stick with regular school and take honors classes or whatever else. maget isnt special for anything

Q: What is the major difference between a Charter School & Magnet School?
Specifically in the state of WI?

A: a magnet school is a school for specific or specialized studies...generally catering to high scoring/well behaved students... a charter school is a school that was failing, closed and then reopened...it is generally funded privately through a corporation or donations...depending on the school it may offer longer hours, stronger core/basic curriculum and be populated by more remedial students...charter schools may often be opened to serve a particular population of student...

Q: Transfer from highly gifted magnet to private school?
Is it wise for a child to move from a highly gifted magnet to a private school (assuming it is also an academically rigorous school)? It sounds really obvious in this question, but will gifted children still get bored or not be as mentally stimulated even if the new private school offers plenty of challenges? Will these "challenges" generally be easier as the kids in private school may not be as academically above par? How will this affect the gifted child? Sorry for the bombard of questions. Your opinions and ideas are much appreciated.

A: Both of my nephews are brilliant. They have both attended private school for many years - the youngest since he was in kindergarten and is now in the 8th grade. The eldest is a senior and is so talented he is very likely to get a full scholarship for a program in nanotechnology engineering. I think they have both been well served by the private school. It is as you say, if the private school is academically rigorous. I think private schools are better equipped to serve the needs of truly brilliant students by individualizing their programs to provide more stimulation and greater challenge.

Q: Do you have to be in magnet in middle school in order to go to a magnet high school???
Does anyone know about D.A.S.H senior high school in Miami Florida? It's a magnet school... well anyways, I am not in a magnet program, and I am not sure if I can go to that school if I am not in a magnet schol in middle school...so people in Miami, help?

A: If you have the grades, I don't think it's mandatory to come from a magnet middle school.

Q: Whats the difference between a magnet and an IB school?
I see a magnet program as a school focusing on a few subjects, where as an IB school is one that focuses on all subjects.

A: A magnet school has the draw of one or more subjects in order to attract students usually from a wide geographic area. An IB school is one that has prestigious honor type classes where academic work and achievements are emphasized./

Q: If you go to or have gone to Whitney Young Magnet High School can you answer this question?
What is it like there? It is a good school? Teeachers; are they good bad? And are their any other things that I need to know? I just got in, and am starting 10th grade.

A: well, I don't go there, not yet. I am an incoming ninth grader/freshman. Well, did you go to the registration in April? I went and I asked a lot of questions to some of the students there and stuff. So I guess that I'll tell you the little bit that I know since you seem to have a shortage of answers. Well, the amount of homework you get depends on the teacher. Some of them focus more on do-the-work-and-get-it done in class approach, while other give some homework every night. If you take P.E. then you have to take swimming, but if you do ROTC then you don't have to take swimming and you don't have to worry about that. It is a pretty academic school, most kids take school seriously, especially the kids taking honors classes and the like. When I went I really liked the school, everyone was really friendly, especially the students, and the school was cool too. They have really big, floor to ceiling windows at some parts of the school and they have three buildings that are connected by bridges that go over the street. You only take P. E. in ninth and tenth grade. You take driver's ed in tenth grade. It usually is best to get a later starting time, especially if you live far from the school. The thing is, with the freshman, we get freshman orientation, so we basically go to Whitney for three days during the summer to get acquainted with the school and the teachers. Like we have a mock schedule where we try to find our classes and we get to ask questions and meet the staff and stuff so I guess that that's when I'll probably learn even more about the school. I've only visited Whitney once, during registration but I really liked what I saw. So I would probably know more around August when the orientation happens. Since you say that you'll be in the tenth grade, I'm assuming that you transferred in. I was going to e-mail you, but then I saw that that wasn't possible. But I have some questions for you if you did transfer. See, I have this friend that wants to transfer to Whitney, but she doesn't really know how. Like what requirements does one need? Should she like join a lot of clubs, what should her GPA be, what should she score on whatever test? Is there a certain test that she must take? How hard/easy is it to transfer in? You know, basic things like that. I would really appreciate any information you have concerning this, if you're transferring in, I mean. If not, then forget what I just said. Also, what you could do is call Whitney and ask if it would be possible to schedule for a student or staff member to give you a tour or even just answer some of your questions. Or maybe you could even sit in during our freshman orientation, I mean technically you're new too. So you should just call and see if there are any options like that available. Well, I hoped I helped!
