Q: Does the school day start when the child arrives at school or when the first bell rings?
If a student arrives at school and leaves before the first bell rings to get to class should they be required to sign out? Or should they only be required to sign out if attendance has already been taken for the first class. This is for middle school age and I am looking for other parents perspectives on this.

A: If the child is on campus after the bell rings, then they should need to sign out to leave regardless if attendance has been taken. If the child leaves campus before the first bell rings then they should not need to sign out.

Q: Is listing a medical school as your first choice a good idea?
I plan to apply to all medical schools in my state and take whatever I can get. Some early decision programs require that you list their school as your first choice on your AMACS application. Will other medical schools know that you chose another school first? Will this affect your ability to get into another medical school if they see that you have chosen another school over theirs?

A: You are more likely to get into a med school if you list it as your first choice (the med schools are seeking a high "yield" of their admitted students), but it IS dishonest to play that game with all the schools you're applying to. It is possible that they share information within the state, so you don't want to take that chance. List your preferred school as your first choice if you have a realistic chance of getting admitted there.

When did the first group of School Dental Nurses start to practise? I don't really need the full date, just the year. But if you know the full date, please tell me!

A: I think it's 1921

Q: What to expect my first semester of nursing school?
I am about to begin my first semester of nursing school in the fall and I'm a little nervous. I was hoping someone could give me some advice to help me get through it and tell me what I can expect as far as my classes go, and especially clinicals. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A: What college are you going to? The first semester of nursing school is usually devoted to medical-surgical nursing. My first semester I took a lot of nursing basic stuff that applies to all people. You'll also take a health assessment where you will learn how to assess all of the body systems. You'll have some labs where you learn simple stuff like blood pressure, pulse, wound care, sterile technique, catheterization, etc. Your clinical will be great. I loved clinicals. You'll be at a hospital probably and you'll work with a nurse and you will just do the things that you have learned in classes already, like when you learn to do vitals and medication administration, you can do these things, and then when you learn to do catheters, you can do that and vitals and meds. It's kind of like just adding on every week. Study alot...Nursing is different than regular college because you have to learn to think in a different way. You'll probably also take a pathophysiology class. Make study groups and don't get behind on things. Also, make sure you go to class, which in my experience, teachers give a quiz everyday to make sure that students attend. Hope this helps...If you have any other questions then let me know....mrb1017@yahoo.com

Q: How is Reading First working in your elementary school and how long has it been in place?
Also, in what state do you teach? I am in a Reading First school and the teachers are extremely frustrated and stressed. We are also seeing a decline in comprehension skills. Do you see these things, too?

A: Did you know that there are investigations to why Reading First is being marketed to schools? "Inspector General's Report Jeopardizes Reading First Program" ""WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Education Office of the Inspector General's (IG) report on Reading First outlines unethical actions by several individuals who violated the intent and spirit of the Reading First statute in an ongoing and systematic manner. These actions have damaged the integrity of the department. It is to its credit that they have issued this report. Now it is time to implement its findings. The IG's report directly quotes individual communications to establish that there was a plan to direct the outcomes of independent panels, stack those panels with those who already had formed a bias, and promote specific reading programs while eliminating others. Specifically the report finds that the department: -- Developed an application package that obscured the requirements of the statute -- Took action with respect to the expert review panel process that was contrary to the balanced panel composition envisioned by Congress -- Intervened to release an assessment review document without the permission of the entity that contracted for its development -- Intervened to influence a state's selection of reading programs and -- Intervened to influence reading programs being used by local education agencies after the application process was complete. " (rest of news release here: http://susanohanian.org/show_nclb_atrocities.html?id=2303 ) Susan Ohanian -- http://susanohanian.org/ has a website that is mainly articles upon articles about atrocities taking place in education. Go to her site. There is a "search site" text box on the right hand side of the page and type in "Reading First" and hit Search Here is a editorial about the program from a very prominent literacy instructor http://susanohanian.org/show_commentary.php?id=50

Q: What are you high schoolers wearing on your first day back to school?
Okay.... I have gone to private, uniformed schools all my life, and for Junior year I am going to a public, unifrom free school... Everyone is so exicted about what they are wearing on thier first day back, but I am clueless!!! Are you wearing a dress? Jeans? Can someone explain exactly what they are wearing and their grade? That would be soooo helpful! Thanks guys!

A: I don't know yet but nothing fancy. People who wear a dress on the first day of school are over doing it a little. Jeans and a tee shirt with a necklace is always a cute look.

Q: What should you bring on the first day of school?
What should you bring on the first day of school? I'm going to be a 10th grader in 2 days. The school didn't tell us what to bring so I'm kind of panicking. :)) lol. Should I bring all the books the school had given me? We haven't been assigned a locker yet. What should I bring on the first day of School? Help me, I'm desperate!

A: Normally teachers don't expect you to bring any books the first day i would just have stuff to write with and paper in a 3-ring binder maybe a planner to write assignments in

Q: How to dress grunge on my first day of school?
I'm going into ninth grade and I want to come back with a completely new look. I've lost a lot of weight over the summer already. I want to know what grunge clothes I could wear on my first day of school that don't break the dresss code. So that means no holes. Also how should I get my hair cut/dyed? Thanks.

A: just start off with small things that seems grungy

Q: How Should I Wear My Hair On The First Day Of School?
I have medium length hair. I have layers, too, and my layers probably end at my collar bone. I have straight hair too. How should I wear my hair on the first day of school? Please can you tell me how long it would take to accomplish the look. Links of the style would be appreciated.

A: I would wear it down. On the first day of school you don't want to look too dressed up. Maybe you should straiten it a bit more to get a polished look. Just look natural and not too dressed up :D

Q: What supplies to bring on the first day of High school?
Okay, if you are going to high school for the first time, and you are a freshmen what supplies do you need on first day of school ? Hints on how to survive in high school would be nice, because this is my first time going to high school and not having any friends in the same class!

A: all you need is a pen/pencil, some paper, and a folder. you really won't need a notebook, calculator, or even a backpack on the first day of high school. you will probably not be starting any lessons in any of your classes on the first day. teachers might go over the rules, some basics, a class overview, and what supplies you will need. =]

Q: What are some good homework assignments for the first week of school?
I am teaching 2nd grade this year and they are going to have a weekly homework sheet with certain routines but I don't want to start this until the second week of school. I still want to assign homework beginning on the first day. What are some good, easy assginments when the first week is shorter and will not be too concerned with academic work (mostly rules, class routines, and assessment)? Many thanks. ASSIGNMENTS- sorry!

A: Here are a few ideas: -Send home a copy of the classroom rules with a check box next to each rule. For homework, ask the students to check the boxes next to the rules that they think they will have the easiest time obeying using a blue crayon; using a red crayon, check the rules that they think they will have to work the hardest to follow and obey. (This activity will somewhat ensure that they have had to "contemplate" the rules and how they will apply to them personally.) -Ask them to draw a picture of what they envision their goals to look like this year. -Give each student a blank name card and instruct them to write their name on it and decorate it any way they would like. Once they are returned, use the name cards to help the students learn each others names. -Tell the students to choose 10 letters from the alphabet and find/write down 10 items in their house that start with each of the letters. Tell them that the class will vote on what item is the most unique.

Q: How can I avoid sweat marks on the first day of school?
I usually sweat during school (alot), but not at home. It's not because I'm hot, but I'm really shy. I want to wear a blue t-shirt on the first day, but I'm scared I'll get dark sweat marks under my arms, and I really don't want that. Any tips to stay dry and sweat mark free? Oh, and of course I wear anti-perspirant/deodorant.

A: deodorant. or they make pads that go inside your shirt so it doesn't go through.

Q: How old do I have to be to get an after school job or something? And what do i have to do first?
I live in Las Vegas and I need an after school job. How old do i have to be? What do i have to do first?

A: You could follow this government-mandated track: Child labor laws under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act were enacted to protect the educational opportunities of minors and to prohibit their employment in jobs characterized by conditions that may be detrimental to their health or well-being. The specific provisions under the act mainly specify what type of work minors can engage in, when they can do it, and how old they have to be to do it. Generally, no one under the age of 14 is permitted to work. Fourteen and 15-year-olds who choose to work may only be employed outside of school hours for a maximum of 3 hours per day and 18 hours per week when school is in session. This age group is also prohibited from working before 7 a.m. and after 7 p.m., except during summers when they may work until 9 p.m. Sixteen and 17-year olds may be employed for unlimited hours. All children under the age 18 are banned from working hazardous jobs that require the operation of dangerous or heavy machinery. When employing minors, companies must pay minors the same minimum wage and overtime that's paid to other employees. Keep in mind that many states have different minimum ages for employment, different hours of work restrictions, and additional occupations identified as hazardous. When state and federal laws differ, the law giving the greatest amount of protection to the minor applies. The consequences of violating child labor laws are harsh. Companies found to be in violation of these laws could be subject to a federal civil penalty of up to $10,000 (ten thousand dollars) for each minor worker improperly employed. Failure to preserve the appropriate records concerning proof of each minor employee's age can also result in a substantial fine.

Q: How do I look beautiful for the first day of school?
I'm hoping to be a bombshell the first day of school, since I got rid of my acne over the summer, due to bye-bye- blemish drying lotion. I have blond hair, shoulder length, and blue eyes. Do you suggest any light make-up or should I keep it natural? (I'm 12, but I look 14/15 because of my height) REMEMBER: IT CANNOT CLOG MY PORES! How do you think I should do my hair? I want to do it down... Also, any tips on how to look nice and act like it for the guys, since I want to get into dating this year. One last thing: Any tips on looking beautiful from the inside, so I can radiate happieness and confidence :)! BEST ANSWER=10 STARS! To all the people who said that I'm to young for boys...I guess you're right! I mean, I really probably inside am not intrested in them, but since !5th! graders are dating, I guess I'm just getting sucked into the blackhole that exsists only of younger and your dating...thank you for your advice. I expect you'd think i'd get mad at you for saying that...but really, I am more mature. Thank you to those of you all who answered.

A: Just try to look natural...it's easy to be hot and over done (i.e lots of make up skimpy clothing) its hard to be NATURALLY beautiful. You sound really pretty too blonde/blue eyes! Maybe find a natural color eyeshadow and a little mascara to make your eyes pop! Stay away from any other facial make up if you can if you have problem skin. Wear your hair straight and down so you can have it flow a bit in wind. As for radiating beauty just be happy with yourself regardless of looks! Do what you can to help people and animals around you and you will feel great inside knowing that your a good person!
