Q: What classes make up the med school curriculum?
Although I am currently on a track to law school, I've recently become interested in psychiatry. I have one problem though; I've never enjoyed science. I would rather take philosophy or sociology over biology or anatomy any day. My question is: what classes are part of the med school curriculum? I'm trying to decide if I can live through med school anyway.
A: The first two years are called "basic sciences", if that gives you a hint. It covers biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, histology, and then in depth scientific looks at every organ or every system in the body (nervous, digestive, ect). After that, you do rotations where you are practically applying the science. I don't think med school is for you if you don't like science. Consider maybe pschology PhDs.

Q: How much freedom do teachers have with a school's curriculum?
How much freedom do teachers have with a school's curriculum? Is it a strict adherence from what the school creates, or do teachers have a part in the process, allowing them to create their own?
A: From my own experience, as long as I follow the state's list of required skills, I can work with the other teachers who teach the same subject and we can work out our own curriculum.
At the school I am at now, I am the only Pre-Calculus teacher. When I went up to school before school started to get the curriculum, I was handed a textbook and told "The first semester is trig, the second is like college algebra, and by the way, there are only 17 books, and 60 kids signed up. Have fun." That was the only direction I got from my school, so I have had to design my own curriculum as I go.
At the school I was at before, I taught algebra 1 along with two other teachers. Once a six weeks we would get together and plan out the six weeks. We worked off of a "scope and sequence" that the school provided that told us what order to teach the skills and how many days to spend on each one, but it was up to us to decide what materials to use and how to present the topics.
Q: In the UK, is spelling part of the curriculum in school?
I did not go through school in the UK and I am wondering if spelling is part of the curriculum. For example does bad spelling loose you points in exams or written coursework?
A: Er... I think you meant to write '... lose you points in exams...' (Loose means 'not tight'.)
Actually, this 'loose/lose' mistake is an increasingly common feature in the writing of many young people in the UK - including university students. And I recently saw a notice advertising a Weight Watchers class that said "Do you want to loose some weight?"!
The serious answer to your question is that spelling is rarely taught as a separate subject in UK schools. Indeed, some educational experts argue that spelling does not matter as long as a child expresses him/herself adequately. The pundits seem to think that insisting on words being correctly spelled stifles a child's creative instinct.
Some would agree with this viewpoint, but to be able to spell is a skill which it is better to possess than not. After all, to be bad at spelling makes doing crosswords almost impossible!
Q: Which home-school curriculum is the best?
I am looking for an elementary home-school curriculum. There are so many to choose from! I am also looking for something that has online instruction and activities as well.
A: http://www.k12.com seems to be a good one.
Q: What home school curriculum should I use?
I am having a little bit of a problem finding a curriculum I am comfortable with. I am looking for science and social studies curriculum for 1st, 3rd and 4th graders. I would like for them to be complete(in a box) with a lot of help for me. And I would like them to be secular, if possible. I would also prefer them to be grade-specific. Any ideas?
I would like to add that I have no problem with christian curriculum, I am currently using Alpha-Omega LIFEPACS for science and social studies, I would just like something different.
A: I would high recommend Sonlight. Everything is planned out so you get to do all the fun stuff with your kids. They offer a bible component but you can order it separately.
There are yahoo groups of families who are secular in their beliefs and still use Sonlight. Sonlight uses all real books and oftentimes you can combine grade levels so the kids are learning the same things.
Best of Luck!

Q: What subjects should be taken out of the high school curriculum?
Personally, I think English, since its boring as hell. Thats why I quit school. Teachers need to be more open to negative feedback by students as long as its not personal attacks.
A: Basically, religion, because the school is not the place to discuss this
Q: What home school curriculum do you recommend for junior/high school for a child interested in zoology?
Specific titles/publishers please, and your experiences with the curriculum.
A: Apologia is considered the best high school science curriculum. It is approached from a very strong Christian perspective, so if that's not what you want, avoid it.
You might check Cathy Duffy's website and book (100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum). The book reviews what she considers the best. Her website only mentions these, but doesn't go into detail (for that, of course, you have to buy the book), but does detail programs that DIDN'T make the book - worth a look, anyway.
Q: Where can I find internet material for teaching home school curriculum?
My daughter is having a lot of trouble in intergrated physics and algebra2. I am 50 years old and do not remember anything from high school. Any information on web sites or other helpful on line help would be appreciated.
A: I completely understand! I have high schoolers, and have to nearly re-learn to help them!
Yahoo education has help with algebra;
http://education.yahoo.com/homework_help/math_help/chapter_list?id=minialg1gt
So does math.com:
http://www.math.com/homeworkhelp/Algebra.html
Physics help:
http://www.physics247.com/
Good luck to you!
Q: What is the best home school curriculum for a 1st grader and a 8Th grader and when can i find it?
They are both behind in school , My 8th grader has not passed sience 5th grade ( I hate the no child left behind crap). If I don,t pull them out now it will get worse please help
A: The best depends on your child...no one can tell you what's best for your family!!! Read All Kinds of Minds, figure out what kind of learners they are. You would choose totally different curriculum for a child who is a visual learner than for a child who is a kinesthetic learner.
Remember that kids in first grade tend to be more hands-on learners anyway, and keep in mind that just because a child is in a certain grade, that doesn't mean that it's the age of curriculum you should buy. If your 8th grader is behind, you need to start where their knowledge ends, or you create a lot of frustration.
First thought is to check local bookstores, Barnes and Noble and Borders both have an extensive homeschooling section. also check out Mardel's Christian bookstore. While much of their curriculum is Christian based, they also have much that is not. You can look through it and see if you like it, and it's easy to return.
Ask your local homeschooling group if they have a curriculum fair coming up...that's an opportunity to really peruse the different ones and get your hands on (there's nothing worse than buying a curriculum and opening and seeing that it's not what you expected...unless it's buying the curriculum and it doesn't work for your child anyway!)
Our town also has a curriculum exchange, so you can go to a bookstore setting, and you get credit for what you bring in, and as well the books/items are much cheaper than new.
Also see if you have a yahoo hs'ing group in your area, on ours lots of people pass stuff on for free, or will let you borrow it to see if it works.
One thing more, if your 8th grader has been miserable in school, you might look into deschooling so that he/she can catch their breath, and recapture their love of learning. Google it and you'll find lots.

Q: Is there a lot of trigonometry in optometry school curriculum?
What undergrad subjects is the curriculum most like? What do you suggest taking to prepare?
A: Well i studied in UK, not alot of trigonometry is involved, having good knowledge of Biology, Maths and Physics is a major plus, probable alot of it is based around Physics and Biology (Anatomy etc), Optometry includes alot of structure/function, its a very clinical subject and alot of the theory you learn you dont use in general day to day practice.
Q: where can I find the best and free internet home school curriculum?
I dont like public school, and I want to show my mom that she doesn't really need to be with me and teach me, so where could I find a webpage that can do that and convince my mom to let me be home schooled? (also, where could I find an awesome online computer class?)
A: See if your state has an online virtual school.
www.k12.com has a list of states that have online virtual schools.
If your state does not offer one, go to www.flvs.net They are based in FL, but will accept students from all over the world as long as they can wring in English.
Q: For those who believe that multiculturalism should be in public school curriculum?
I'm finding many articles about multicultural education in which race and ethnicity are emphasized.
How can we incorporate other minorities, such as religions, class, gender, and things like 'people with disabilities into the multicultural classroom?
For those who don't believe multiculturalism it should be implemented into public school cirriculum, go ahead and state your answer to get your 2 points. However, you're answer will be irrelevant to me.
A: I don't think that it needs to be a curriculum. We do a lot of it in social studies. I just make sure that my students are aware of other cultures.
Q: Where can I find the primary school curriculum and standards for 7 year old children?
My 7 year old has had a spanish only (English taught as foreign language 2 times per week) education since the age of 3. We are returning to New Zealand next year and I would like to begin to prepare him for entry into school. I need to find out what the standards are for his age, and what is being taught for this age. Thanks
A: Contact the school your child will be attending and ask for information regarding their overall averages for student attendance, grades, and discipline records as well as a copy of their handbook. The school may have online copies of these records or they may require you to pay postage for them to send you the copy. Also ask them questions regarding the classes that he will be taking at that school as well as what each class requires.
