Q: Which school calendar would you prefer for your kids?
Traditional - Goes to school from late August to early June Multitrack Year Round - Goes to school all through the year and they track out every 9 weeks for a 3 week vacation. Some Elementary Schools & Some Middle Schools here in Wake county run on MultiTrack Year round and others run on Traditional. All high schools here run on Traditional.

A: There are lots of factors. But I think I'd prefer Multi-track. I student taught in such a district. There was less absenteeism for family holidays since you could plan that winter trip to Disney around a break. Kids did not fall as behind during the summer and kids of working parents did not have that long-haul at summer day care. There was still plenty of time for some of those lazy days of summer - but kids were also able to take that ski trip, that trip to the fall leaves, etc. w/o missing school. The little bit lost after 3 each weeks was more than compensated for by not losing as much over the summer. Many families were able to plan non peak-season vacations at a much cheaper price. And - as a note - a lot of cycle or track schools have a "double break" for summer where kids are off for 6 weeks over the summer. The day care centers adjusted their schedules to accommodate kids that were on cycle breaks. And it saved the School District money because they were able to handle overcrowding by having 1/4 of the students out of the building at any given time - which meant more money for programs. I'm a strong proponent.

Q: Does anyone go to a high school that runs on a trimester calendar?
Do you like it? Hate it? I personally hate it. Cierra S., Oh really? We have finals at the end of every Trimester. (November, March, June)

A: When I was in high school, the district adopted a trimester calendar. I personally did not care for it, nor did my teachers, especially in the math department, where the curriculum was arranged into two-term courses. Look at it this way: a student who completes their mathematics class in the first and second trimesters would then have to go from about March until August with absolutely no math at all. Imagine how much the students forgot over that huge timespan! I remember having to spend three weeks reviewing old material when we returned to school. From my perspective, there were no benefits whatsoever to adopting the trimester. It worked out so that the teachers had to cram the same lesson plans from the semester program into the shortened terms of the trimester program, which they were rarely able to do. The quality of education really suffered as a result. It felt as if we sped through everything, and don't even get me started on the added pressure from statewide testing. Ugh. Just to address the issue from another answerer: We definitely did have finals at the end of each and every trimester at my school. They may not have all been final exams, but they were still final projects or papers. Counted as finals nonetheless. You'll get through it, I sure did. Just take care that you're really learning some good study habits and time management skills, because those, in my opinion, turn out to matter much more once you move on from high school.

Q: Where can I find the schedule for all U.S. municipal school systems? (The yearly schedule calendar)?
I own a cabin rental business and I need to time my advertising campaigns around school holidays (since we cater mostly to families). Is ther a website that lists the yearly calendar for all municipal school systems in the US.? I have about 50 different websites for our school systems yearly calendar and that's only for Georgia! I'm just hoping that somewhere there's a spot where they are ALL posted.

A: Schools are locally controlled (And usually each has a slightly different schedule). I don't think such a website exists.

Q: How to deal with one child on 4 track and one child on conventional calendar schools?
We are moving to Parker Co. and while the elementary schools are on year round schedules, the MS and HS are on Conventional (summer break) schedules. How does a family deal with that when both parents are working? I dont want them to be alone at home. My husband says (well, other families must deal with it, so dont worry) I just wanted to see what other parents do. Its going to be and adjustment for them just moving, let alone not having each other to play with during times off of school.

A: Check with the school district for your elementary child and see if they offer any Inter-session classes or if there are any AfterSchool Programs which run during the time that students are off-track. I student taught at year round schools and while one track was off, the students were able to come and be in a multi-grade level Inter-session class which was only 1/2 day the other half of the day they were able to go to the YMCA program which did cost a little for some of the parents (it went by how much they make) and was for those families who did not have afterschool child care set up. Then during the Summer Month off they can, if you chose, stay with one another.

Q: How do I use a calendar for school?
I am in the 8th grade and want to get really organized before High School starts. I got a calendar for Christmas that I put on my wall. Every time I walk into my room the calendar is right in my face. I have another calendar in my backpack, it's very small and I only have room for homework assignments. My English teacher checks quarterly to make sure we are using this calendar (we had to buy at the beginning of the school year, it also has the handbook it there). How should I use this calendar that I got for Christmas? I want to mainly use it for school. Does anyone have any other tips on how to get organized before high school starts?

A: Good for you for staying on top of things this young! Being organized will definitely help you in high school as things get busier and the workload gets heavier. Since you already have the smaller one for homework, I would use the new one to keep track of your bigger assignments, projects, and tests. You could also use it for school events or club meetings/sports practices & games if you do extracurriculars. The easiest way to keep it all organized is to get several different colored pens or markers. Make each type of note on your calendar a different color, such as green for tests, blue for projects, red for extracurriculars, purple for non-school related events or plans, etc. Make sure to cross off each day once it's over with a big X. That way, you can easily see what day it's on and what you have coming up to prepare for. Also, while I agree with the other answerer that getting ahead with assignments is a good idea, I'd advise you not to get TOO far ahead of yourself, especially when you're a freshman. Think small...start by planning for the coming month. First of all, high school can be a lot more work than you're used to and getting too far ahead of yourself can make even the most well organized person overwhelmed. Secondly, teachers often clarify or revise project requirements, reading assignments, and the like according to how far ahead or behind the coursework is going and based on questions or concerns from students. Sometimes assignments are even dropped and replaced with something different. After all, teachers are human and sometimes what they plan doesn't always work out exactly that way. Any good teacher will advise you of changes as soon as he or she makes them but if you end up getting too far ahead of yourself, you could end up spending your time on something that is later changed or cancelled. Hope this helps...good luck!

Q: Are there an equal number of human births on each day of the calendar?
Or would the histogram have peaks and valleys according to the season or some other time dependent variable such as the school calendar, holidays or basic weather patterns? I was hoping to hear of solid data that repeats according to the calendar. Before modern times, the church required fasting and sexual abstinence many times a year. I've wondered if this was calculated to harmonize the seasons, harvests and planting with child birth.

A: They say there are more births during a full moon than any other time. I've heard this from nurses & doctors that work in hospital maternity floors.

Q: In other cultures, does the school year start in the middle of the calendar year?
I was just thinking about how I've never considered January to be the beginning of a new year. To me, it's always been September. Do you know of any places where they are synchronized?

A: In Japan, the school year begins and ends in April. They still get a month and a half for summer break, but they are in the same grade after the break.

Q: How do I make a calendar on the computer?
I'm making a calendar for school and I found a way to make a calendar but I need to rename all the months, days of the weeks and holidays.

A: Here's a link to Microsoft Templates=calendar. They have templates for various programs. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/results.aspx?qu=calendar&av=TPL000
