Q: What is your opinion of alternative schools?
I just got switched into alt school and i HATE all the judements i get. But the people here are AMAZING people and i love it. So i was just wondering other peoples opinions. the alt school i go to is AMAZING. the people to the teachers to my friends everything. everyone treats people like family. but people put a bad name to alt schools. even my parents. i hateeee it. its not strict AT ALL. i love it and i plan on staying a long time.

A: I've subbed in a variety of different schools, from small to bigger schools and elementary to High school. The alternative schools here are run by very competent adults. They are retired police officers or security guards as well as previous principals . The kids there are often troubled by others or are troubles to others and themselves. However by the end of the school year many of the kids have a major turn about in their views and attitudes. They often remain there for the rest of their school years. However some do return to regular school systems. I have heard a lot of the kids there talk about how they hated the way it's run and the people are too strict , but they soon learn why it must be a tough love situation here. Besides the normal school studies and curriculum they learn skills to help them survive in the real world , Such as janitorial or cooking and auto repairs, secretarial skills etc. The judgments you talk about are only temporary in most cases, or are taken the wrong way. Once you get to know people and begin to fit in then those feelings and views soon go away or don't feel as heavy or bad as they do right now. Give it time. You'll see how well you can do there, and how much you can / will excel there.

Q: A nation among nations What is an alternative way national history should be taught in schools?
In the book A nation among nations what does thomas bender offer as an alternative to the current way that national history should be taught in schools?

A: An alternative way that it should be taught is accurately. I have learned more in the last six months about the U.S. Constitution, its origins, and various unconstitutional infringements committed by our own government, than I ever did in 12 years of lower education.

Q: are there any homeschool or alternative schools in the hampton or richmond area?

A: Hormeschool can be done in any location as far as I know. Ask teh school districts about alternate schools. You can also check in the yellow pages for each area. Another alternate is to do a web search for alternative schools which I would have done if you had given tehj grade level.

Q: What is the purpose of an "alternative school?"?
My stepson 16, cannot go to a regular high school because of some trouble he got in. He just came to live with us after not seeing him or him having anything to do with us for two years. He goes to an alternative school. When I drop him off in the morning-no one has winter coats on and all the kids are smoking on school grounds-even though the age to buy tobacco is 18 in Michigan. There are no books to bring home, no locker, no book bags allowed, and NO homework. It is like they make it easy on these kids because they can't conform. They have an OPEN campus for lunch, thus whoever has a car can drive away from the place and never return. I find that contradictory that they can't bring a bag with a lunch in it but can go out of the building for an hour or so.Are these schools effective???

A: It sounds like you need to find an alternative alternative school. My sister teaches at an alternative school, and I know that it is nothing like that. Remember that as a guardian you have the right to sit in on a class or two at the school... I would request that. I would also suggest calling the police if you see under age smoking, ESPECIALLY if it is on school property. These schools should still have a principal. Sit down and explain your concerns. The books, bags, and homework may be security related issues. In CA, teachers are required by law to have a book for each student in the classroom. Asking at risk kids to do homework can be a battle the teacher has chosen not to fight. In any case, I would speak to the teachers and/or principals and voice your concern.

Q: are there any alternative schools in the oklahoma city district?

Q: Are there any good schools for renewable and alternative energy?
I am thinking about pursuing a career in this field, right now I am an electrical engineering student, but I wonder if there's better choice for me.

A: Electrical Engineering will provide more opportunities than Environmental Engineering. The UCs such as UCLA and Berkeley have Environmental programs. Check them out.

Q: Anybody here go to an alternative high school? How are the classes different from a regular school?
I know that they are suppose to be self paced but do you take just as many pop quizzes and have just as many homework assignments as a traditional class. Are you required to do projects? Are the rules for behavior just as strict as a traditional high school? Could a student go to an alternative school because he likes the flexible schedule or is it ONLY for kids who have gotten themselves in trouble?

A: I went to an alternative school cause i needed to get done faster and The work was just packets. We could only take them home after a certain amount of days without absences and had to bring them back. We had to do test separate from our packets to turn in. There aren't any pop quizzes cause u do everything on Ur own. As far and rules well it all depends on what school. The one i went to was a Lil more flex able but i wasn't a real trouble maker. I finished 8 classes in 3 months and still got to walk with the main school.

Q: How will being suspended and sent to an alternative school affect criminal background record?
If you are a minor in Texas, and you violate a code of conduct at your high school, get suspended and sent to an alternative school-- 1. does this show up on a criminal background check? 2. Will it affect college admissions?

A: No it doesn't show up on a back ground check but it could affect college admissions, I am not sure about that, they will probably pass you over for someone who went to a regular school if you are trying to get into a competitive program.

Q: Does attending an alternative school look bad on your college transcript?
I'm just wondering because I made the decision a couple months ago to go to an alternative school rather than stay in the public school system. I really did not learn much there and my choice for the transition was based on my WANTING to get a good education. The problem is, a lot of people frown down upon those who attend my school and a few people have mentioned that it probably won't look good to colleges that I couldn't achieve good grades in a "normal" school. I'm not stupid or anything. I'm actually recieving very good grades (Highest honor roll, currently) and my attendance record has improved dramatically. I'm just very afraid that I won't be accepted by a good college of my choosing.

A: Well congratulations on making 'highest honor roll'! I don't personally know the answer to your question. I'm sure that many variables come into play when admissions is looking at prospective student applications such as GPA (grade point average), afterschool activities, volunteer work, SAT scores and one's college essay, if required, when making their decision. Just fyi, if one goes to a community college for the two years, earning the 60 college credits or so, they may be able to transfer to a 4-year college or university without having to have taken the SAT's (not that it sounds like an issue for you :) Perhaps you can call a few local colleges and ask to speak with an admissions counselor about it. And I'm not saying that your school is what I'm referring to, but some public school systems have an 'alternative high school' that remains part of that school system, however, the person's high school diploma has the main public high school's name engraved on it. If you are doing so much better where you are and the school is accredited by the department of education, I don't see why you should return to a school that you seemed unhappy with. Perhaps calling some colleges can help you feel a bit better. Wishing you the best of luck! Q: How can I convince Mom to let me go to alternative school?
Around here, we have alternative school, which gives you all your major classes and not electives, and you only have to go four hours a day. I brought it up and she got ridiculously mad. "It's a WUSSY'S way out!!!" She screamed. How can I convince her otherwise?

A: OK, wait till she is not so mad any more and then present the pros and cons to her. Some how make it seem like it is her idea that it is good and she will go for it. If you are determined to just convince her, I don't think you stand much chance unfortunately. Good luck.
