Q: What is the education level to become a teacher in Virginia?
I've have a mastes dergee in sociology from my Country and have done a meeting and event management certificate from Northern Virginia Community College. I would like to change my profession and become a teacher. what other qualification do i need to become a teacher in Virginia School.

A: You need to contact the Virginia Department of Education. You can also find helpful information on their website: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/ I am a teacher in VA, and I have a BS. in Special Education. I have, however, been a teacher for 20 years, and back then, a BS was all that was required to become a teacher. I'm not sure if you HAVE to have a M. Ed. to become a teacher. Also, if you're a career-switcher, your core knowledge classes will most likely count toward a teaching certificate. You will, however, probably be required to take some teaching classes, as well. In either case, you will also have to take the PRAXIS - Teacher's exam - before they will issue you a teacing certificate. Get on the Va. Dept. of Ed. website, go to the "teachers" area, and find the phone numbers of the people in the certification department. They will tell you where to start to find out what you need to know. ;)

Q: What university is better in terms of education & price: Ohio State University or West Virginia University?
*Price, as in if i'm a resident of either state when i start the school

A: I'm absolutely not ragging on WVU, which is an excellent engineering school. However, OSU is consistently high-ranked (as in, Top Tier school) with regards to education--and the tuition is fair over many similar schools. But you can check out rankings: OSU, 56th place: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/items/6883 Good luck!

Distance Education and Training Council & The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV accredited? is it possible to obtain financial aid for a school that is a distance learning degree that is Distance Education and Training Council & The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) accredited. Like a Pell Grant or Scholarship ? I am 38 yrs old with a GED from 20 yrs ago but have found a Private School that will accept a Bachelors from online school this in the field I ultimately wish to pursue I mean the Private School emailed me that they will accept a Degree from this particular online school as meeting their educational requirements for admittance

A: DETC accreditation is fine as they are approved by the US Dept of Ed as a recognized accreditor. the state licensing you mentioned is technically only that: a license to operate within state borders. Whether or not the DETC school you refer to participates in the federal PELL program is something you have to check out.

Q: Will I receive a premium education from a public university like UNC or Virginia?
Please compare it to an Ivy League university.

A: Both are excellent institutions (if you mean Chapel Hill at UNC), and you can get an excellent education at either. By challenging yourself, taking tough courses and taking advantage of all the programs and activities that might interest you, you can get an education that could if not rival an Ivy, certainly come close. It's not just the reputation of the school, it's what you put into your own education that counts.

Q: Is there any Special Education - Preschools in Ohio or Virginia? ?
I am currently, looking for a job at one.

A: You should contact your local school districts. They are always looking for aides to work with special needs children, especially in the younger grades. Most preschoolers with special needs are serviced by public schools so I am not sure about any private preschools

Q: West Virginia State Board of Education et. al. v. Barnette et al...?
Why is the year in which this case was decided significant in discussing it's importance? And can anyone find a site with the actual FULL TEXT?

A: West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943), was a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States that held that the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution protected students from being forced to salute the American flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance in school. It was a significant court victory won by Jehovah's Witnesses, whose religion forbade them from saluting or pledging to political institutions or symbols. However, the Court did not address the effect the compelled salutation and recital ruling had upon their particular religious beliefs, but instead ruled that the state did not have the power to compel speech in that manner for anyone. Barnette overruled a 1940 decision on the same issue, Minersville School District v. Gobitis (also involving the children of Jehovah's Witnesses), in which the Court stated that the proper recourse for dissent was to try and change the school policy democratically. In Barnette Justice Robert H. Jackson wrote for the majority and his opinion is considered one of the great statements of freedom in American history.[original research?] However, in overruling Gobitis the Court primarily relied on the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment rather than the Religion Clause. Q: How can I get my child back into special education?
My daughter was in the special education program till after kindergarten (PEEPprogram, then First steps, then collaberative k in Virginia) then they said due to her progress they pulled her out. Last year in first grade she was having alot of issues ranging from her attention due to adhd, to writing problems, to comprehension, to fine motor skills. I want to put her back into the program to give her the help she needs.

A: That happens sometimes when kids transistion from preschool to school aged. Although an evaluation is required by law at the age of 6, it's tough to assess academic skills in at that age and come up with discrepancies from cognitive skills (which also isn't that great to do at 4 or 5)! You will need to request a new evaluation be conducted. Most schools have a child study teams that get scheduled quickly, so get on the list early. The team will meet and this is where you can bring your concerns and documentation you have. This is not a scary process, nor is it a delay tactic- you want the people who will evaluate your child to know what your concens are, and you can get a good feel for who will be working with your kid. It's good to build relationships with them- get phone numbers and e-mails so you can be appraised of progress or any concerns that may arise. If she's moved schools, make sure the new school knows her educational history, as this school doesn't know her past the way you do. Also bring information you have regarding her ADHD. Ask her previous teacher to attend the meeting as well. The school may want to put interventions in place, which is fine, but they can complete an eval at the same time. Go ahead and request to waive the time between an intervention and evaluation. For your eval, be sure to ask for an occupational therapist to participate as she has motor problems. Once the data is complied, you'll meet again. As a school-aged child, if her difficulties are severe enough to warrant special education, she would likely be called a child with an Other Health Impairment. Then an IEP would be written. If she doesn't seem to have severe enough needs to benefit from special education, request that a 504 plan be considered and written. This can provide classroom and testing accommodations to your child. This plan can provide reduced homework, study partners, extra books, etc. Sometimes this is the best option for ADHD kids who really don't need pull out, but need help focusing in the classroom. For the record, in my state, occupational therapists can provide services for kids on 504 plans. On your part, make sure she has good attendance and that medical needs are met (glasses if she needs them, any medical treatment offered by your doctor, etc.)
