Q: Job Hunting in Education; Ohio. Sending out resumes, but not getting phone calls or interviews. What's wrong?
I just graduated with my masters in school counseling and am looking for a job in August. So far, I have not been called for an interview and would like some helpful advice. There aren't many jobs in my area, but I apply for all within an hours drive, then send a hardcopy of a cover letter, my resume, and a list of professional and personal references. Friends and colleagues all say my resume is great. I have a good deal of experience and a great list of references. Should I be sending letters of recommendation at this stage as well? Should I always follow up with a phone call? Should I try to make a face to face meeting to introduce myself? How much can I do without becoming a pest? I appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you.

A: Hi, The most important thing to remember about job searches is that you should use a combination of methods regardless of your location. Networking - Register at your local Unemployment Office (you don't need to be on unemployment to register for their assistance). They often will have networking groups on a regular basis. They also are a good source for the jobs that never show up in the paper or online. Check your local paper -- In many cases the paper's classified are now online. Search Smart Online -- If you don't have a lot of time, spend most of your time at sites that aggregate the job feeds from several job search engines. Prominently these include indeed.com and thingamajob.com. Organization -- I use a free online application that allows you to track your ads, jobs you apply for, send or print mail merged correspondence, and track your job search history. This site is jobsearchlog.com Good Luck, Karen http://indeed.com http://job-hunt.org http://jobsearchlog.com

Q: Is there a list of Schools for Cleveland, Ohio that participate in the Box Tops for Education Program?
How can u sign a School up for Box Tops for Education Program? How does the School select the prizes? Pleeeeez Heeeeeeeelp

A: Go to www.boxtops4education.com. There is a link that will show you how to enroll your school. You can also find out what schools in an area already participate and how much they have earned this year, last year, etc. It's a great website and I'm sure you'll find it very informative. They also have stories on the top producing schools and share information on how their programs have become so successful. When you ask how does the school select the prizes are you referring to the prizes they usually give to the class that collects the most? Prizes should be left up to the PTA/PTO and usually are small parties for the class who collects the most each month (ice cream or pizza party), depending on how much is raised. Campbell's also has a good program where you can earn points for your school that can later be used to purchase items. You can collect Campbell's soup, Chunky soup and Prego pasta sauce labels as well as goldfish cracker's bar codes. There's a huge list of items that you can collect and exchange for points. Good luck to you!

Q: ohio state good for education and basketball?

A: The Buckeyes will be good in basketball and football as long as Thad Matta and Jim Tressel hang out. Ohio State's future is in good hands. As for the academics, Ohio State is one of the nation's largest campuses holding almost 40,000 students. However OSU is divided into separate colleges. I went to Fisher School of Business and it's got one of the best resource facilities and alumni affiliations in the country. Despite it's athletic prowess, OSU is great especially for a state school.

Q: Ohio Hunter education question.?
I was wanting to watch a friend hunt for the first day of gun season, but they told me that i need to take the hunter safety course in order to walk around with them. Im 16 by the way. I was wondering if i could take an "online" hunter safety course for any other state and still be able to go along with them?

A: Hate to be blunt with you, but if your friend is one of the "they" who told you the hunter safety course is needed in order to tag along and watch, they may have been politely trying to discourage you from going without hurting your feelings...giving you an easy out so you and they save face. Then again, maybe they really would like you along but also want you smart enough on what's happening so you don't get in the way. Since you wouldn't be hunting there's no government requirement to take hunter's ed, period. To accompany your friend, though, you should comply with his request, or not go. Since the guidance to have hunter's ed is from "they" and not the gov't, ask "them" if online hunter's meets their desire or not. If it does, you can find one at http://www.hunter-ed.com/

Q: Good Early Childhood Education colleges in Ohio?

A: I'm glad to see someone interested in educating young children in our state -- despite what the first poster said. I can tell you about the place where I work at, The University of Toledo. We have a College of Education and offer an early childhood education program (you can learn more at http://utoledo.edu/education/programsDegrees/undergraduate/earlyChildhood.html and even download a brochure there). For other colleges in Ohio, visit this site: http://www.ncate.org/public/stateInstit.asp?ch=106&state=OH. It is from the National Council for Accredidation of Teacher Education. Basically, they are a group that makes sure the education programs at colleges are following guidelines and adequately preparing teachers. So wherever you go, you want to make sure your school is accredited by them, at the very least. We are pretty awesome overall in Ohio in that our teacher training and preparation are among the best in the nation. I have heard that other states' school districts even recruit in Ohio rather than their own states because they know our level of prepatation. Best of luck in your search!

Q: Can I teach high school without a bachelors in education?
I have a BSBA, an MBA and am getting my Masters in Education. Question is can I teach in the state of Ohio with a Masters in Education and not a Bachelors in Education. If so does anyone know the route to licensure?

A: Here's the route: Contact the Ohio State Board of Education and inquire about certification procedures. You will soon learn what is required. Normally you will be given some tests in the area in which you want to teach after you have completed necessary coursework in education. You might be granted a provisional certificate to teach in high-demand areas... so inquire about that. The provisional certificate does expire, however, and you are encouraged during that time to complete necessary requirements for full certification.

Q: What are some of the top colleges for special education?
I have a B.S. degree in deaf education, and I'd like to pursue my master's in special education. I'm considering Ohio State University, but I wonder what other programs are considered "high-quality." I have a family, so I'm kind of rooted in Ohio. But I would love to take on-line classes!

A: The University of Kansas has an excellent department of special education - so does the University of Nebraska at Lincoln - you will love Nebraska if you have BS in deaf ed because Boystown is near, too. Boystown is such an awesome place. I have a MS in speech-language pathology and although I didn't attend Nebraska, I sure wish I would have because their department of special education and department of communication disorders is in the same building and work very closely with each other - with Boystown so close - I think its a great choice! Good luck.
