Q: how do summer college courses get calculated into GPA?
If I took a summer course at my college and got an A, does that give me a 4. gpa for that summer session, but does it get added into the accumulative gpa as a whole semester? For example, if I went to school 4 years and got a 3.5 gpa all 8 semesters, and did one summer session and got a 4.0. would they add the 4.0 in as a 9th semester? Please explain, thanks!

A: GPAs in college are not based on semesters really. They are cummulative and whatever grades you make get put into a big pool that reflects your GPA. If you want to know how it would specifically read on your transcript, then yes, it would show a summer semester with your grade or grades.

Q: College summer programs for high school students?
I'm looking for a college offering a summer program for high schoolers that is affordable and would be beneficial. I've already seen those offered at the Ivy league schools and costs are too expensive. What are some programs that cost around $3000 for maybe a month? I want to major in English writing.

A: Look up Savannah College of Art and Design's summer programs.

Q: What is a good study abroad program for the summer before college?
I am going to graduate from high school in about the middle of May, and I would like a good study abroad program in Europe that takes most of the summer before college. I would prefer it to focus on learning a language and provide college credit. Do you know of any programs? They can be for other subjects too.

A: www.yfu.org great place. went with them myself.

Q: Which transcript should I send to attend another college summer school?
I am a first Time college student. I started school in in the spring of 2008. My plans are not really to transfer but to enroll in summer courses at another school. The year is still going on.. so i havent recieved any final grades on my transcript yet. So should I send my high school transcript or ... what?

A: You have to talk to the school you'll attend this summer and see that THEY want. Many schools want an unofficial transcript, which might just show the classes you are taking this semester. But it shows that you are an official students of that school. When the grades are complete, you can request that an official transcript be sent to the summer school. After summer school is over, ask THAT college to send a transcript back to your regular college. It's a pain to keep on top of all of it, but really becomes second nature before long.

Q: What is the college summer term like?
I was just wondering what kind of attendance colleges get during the summer. Namely my current one Portland Community College in Oregon. I was wondering if registration for classes is just as much as fall, winter and spring quarters.

A: way less students, went summer term last year, the classes however are somewhat decent sized anywhere from 20-30 students in the 2 classes i took last summer. Kinda a bummer to go to school with the sun out so much though.

Q: How do college summer programs look?
I want to do something over the summer that will look good for college admissions. Would taking a course at Yale or Harvard look good on an application (assuming I do well)?

A: Probably not. However, if you want to look good for resumes, look into doing summer internships or volunteering for a local charity. Doing mission work also looks good and rounds out anyone's resume.

Q: As a HS student, can you use college classes taken over the summer towards college applications?
I'm going to be a senior in high school.. and I'm taking two classes (Philosophy and Sociology) at a community college this summer. I was wondering if you can use the two grades from those classes towards my GPA on my college application. Please, it's really important and I need to make sure that it's worth as much to take these classes. I need to know ASAP - any info. is helpful. Thanks in advance!

A: i think you can.. im not sure - sorry.

Q: Have you ever done a college summer program at another uni?
I've been trying to decide if I want to go to NYU for their summer program...it's slightly pricey and of course a pricey city..has anyone else here done a summer program from college students at NYU or any other school? Any info would be helpful. Thank you.

A: I have not. My daughter and her (now) husband went to Montreal for a year. It was an excellent experience for them. They had to learn to communicate in French. If you can do this program -- do it! The more experiences you build on your way to your degree, the better it will be on your resume. My niece is working on becoming an international ambassador and has been to many places in the world. She started school this year at Penn State. Her credentials of travel helped her get in.

Q: Looking for good college summer programs?
I am going to be a freshman in college next year and was wondering if there are any schools that offer summer programs before I go away to school? I know they have programs for high school students but I was wondering if there are any good ones for college freshmen? Thanks!

A: I was accepted into Penn State and they have a summer program. It is called Learning Edge Academic Program and I start July 1. I can get my basic classes out of the way before I start the fall semester.

Q: What is a good job for the summer before college?
I recently graduated high school and I need a job for the summer/early fall leading into my first year of college. What or where are some good places to look beyond just minimum wage fast food?

A: Summer camps and landscaping companies. Enjoy the beautiful weather. And don't spend all summer working if you can help it - spend time with your friends before you all head off to college. That's important!

Q: Community college summer classes as a community college sophomore?
Hi, I was wondering whether I can take summer classes in my community college as a sophomore so that i can transfer to a state university faster. Is this possible? What are the maximum number of general ed. classes that I can take during the summer? Just for your info, I go to evergreen valley community college in san jose and plan to transfer to san jose state university. thanks. So, isn't that really a HUGE steal for someone who wants to transfer to a university faster.

A: Summer semesters operate the same as spring and fall semesters, so yes, your credit hours should count. Talk to an advisor to get more information

Q: Summer college graduation and background check?
I just got a job offer and they are going to do a background check. I told them I had just finished college, which I did, but I don't officially get my degree until the end of the summer semester, which is like August 10th. Should I call the lady on Monday and inform her that I want her to understand that I finished my courses but did not officially get my degree? If called, my college will say that I finished all the requirements for the degree. I guess what I can want to know is if the employer is really going to care? It's a big company, like the size of Walmart. It's possible they may not even check the college graduation

A: On your application, you should have listed a "graduation date" or "date of degree" - if your answer there matches what you say above, there will be no issue. I'm in HR and companies DO check. If the dates are close, like your situation, it's usually not a big deal. If you were actually graduating in December, that would be another story. You should be good.
