Q: Safe places to live near Salem State College?
I'm planning on going to college at Salem State College is Massachusetts, and I'm not going to be living on campus. My friend and I are going to get and apartment, but we want to make sure it's in a safe neighborhood. I'm looking to living somewhere fourty-minutes from the school at the most. If anyone knows of any really safe area's that would be great. Preferably like, twenty minutes, to a half hour from the school. Thanks in advance. Thanks. Any other suggestions?

A: Actually an idyllic place to live would be Marblehead which is right on the water and only 4 miles away.

Q: What is the difference between Out-of-State College Students and In-State College Students?
What is the difference between Out-of-State College Students and In-State College Students. Also, how do you change from an Out-of-State to an In-State College Student? More Details: Admission, College, University, School, State, Residency, Financial Aid, Residence.

A: Out-of-State and In-State refers to a student's residency status for tuition purposes. It means Non-Resident and Resident respectively. A Resident is someone who is a resident for tax purposes of that state the school is located in. You must also reside in the state for at least 12 months prior to the start of your enrollment. If you are under the age of 24 and you are a full-time student, you are most likely claimed as a dependent on your parent(s)/legal guardian(s) State taxes. Because you are a dependent, your residency status is based on your parent(s)/legal guardian(s). Being a Resident will qualify you for tuition at a discounted rate. Non-Resident students pay a higher tuition rate. Normally State institutions differentiate between Residents and Non-residents because they receive State funding. Converting to Resident status is not as simple as it used to be. Simply residing in the state for 12 months and filing State taxes as a Resident is not necessarily sufficient to show show your intent to make the State your legal residence. If you are registered for 6 or more credits at an institution, that shows your intent to be in the State is for educational reasons, therefore it does not qualify you for Resident tuition. If you have any further questions about residency, drop me an email. Best wishes!

Q: What to bring for a out of state college visit?
I am doing a out of state college visit ... what all should i bring while i am on the college tour? this is my first college visit and its out of state so i don't know. thanks.

A: If you are just visiting and not applying you don't need to bring anything. You could bring a camera or video camera so you can review when you get home. A list of questions you want to ask. Maybe something to jot down your notes on. Ask for a meeting with a professor in the area you are majoring in. We also met with the admissions office.

Q: Is it possible to transfer from a state college to a more prestigious college?
Like say...Sacramento State college to....Stanford University? Is this possible? If so what are the requirements? Also is it possible to go from a Community college to a college like Standford?

A: The elite schools admit very few transfer students. Princeton, for example, does not admit any transfer students. Yale and Harvard admitted about 35 -- out of hundred of applicants. Standors is somewhere in between Princeton and Harvard -- they admitted 20 transfer students last year -- about 1.5% of those who apply. I'm sure that some of those students transferred from a public university. However, I suspect that they are from the more prestigious state universities like Berkeley, Virginia or Michigan. But to be honest, I seriously doubt that any of them transferred from a CSU school.

Q: How can I check the accredidation of a College in the state of New Jersey?
The name of the College is Thomas Edison State College in Trenton. Thank You!

A: Go here: http://www.tesc.edu/aboutus/accreditation.php You can verify that with the accrediting boards if you wish. The phone numbers and web address of the accrediting body are right there. However, with state schools such as this, you can trust their claims pretty safely.

Q: What is the difference between a State College, Community College, and a University??
Anyone know what the difference is between a State College, Community College, and a University?? A college that I recently applied to has changed from a state college to a university. I am guessing this is good, or is it any different?

A: Traditionally, a university is a collection of colleges. Kind of like saying the apple of Ohio and the orange of Ohio. If you had an apple and orange together, it would be the fruit of Ohio. So you could have a College of Nursing of Ohio or a College of Engineering of Ohio. But if you had the college of Nursing and College of Engineering together, then you would have the University of Ohio. The term community college usually refers to a junior college

Q: Anyone here received their bachelors from a state college ang got their masters at a top school?
I go to a california state college to get an accounting degree. Even though i was accepted to UC schools, i could not go there because i had to stay home to help my family so i decided to go to a cal state school to save money. My dream is to get my MBA from a top college like UCLA or Berkeley, but i am afraid that noone will accept because of the fact that i went to a state college. Does anyone know of someone who has taken my path? Anyone with suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

A: well, if people who go to a community college have garunteed acceptance (if GPA is good) into a UC school during bachelors, I would see you having no problem getting in having gone to a CSU.

Q: whats the difference between going to a state college for 4 years?
i wanted to know whats the differece between going to a state college for 4 years. and going to a community college for 2 years. and transfer for 2 years into a state college? wouldnt it be the same? because some college lady came talking about this stuff to us and told us about how you can do that.

A: The main differences are the programs and classes offered at each. If your plan is to transfer to a four-year college later, you will need to plan your schedule carefully because if you take classes at the community college that don't have a clear equivalent at the specific university you're planning on attending, your credits may not transfer and you may have to end up repeating some classes. It's important to know which college you plan on tranferring to and keeping in touch with their academic affairs department when planning your schedule to make sure the credits will transfer BEFORE taking the class. The other disadvantage is that you can't start on your major right away because you'll have to do basically just your general requirements at the Community College. I did all four years at a private college and since some of the classes in my major also met general requirements I had enough time to take classes in a different area and ended up with a major, two minors, and took a bunch of classes in Ceramics just for fun. If I'd started at a Community College, I would have had to spend my Jr. and Sr. years only taking classes in my major and probably having to take very heavy class loads in order to complete a couple general requirements that weren't offered at the Community College. As far as advantages, Community College is cheaper (especially if you're planning to transfer to a private school later on) and allows you to take some classes to get General Req's out of the way if you have no idea what you want to major in yet. They also offer some Associate's degree programs in skilled trades that only two years are required for (and therefore not offered at many four year schools) like culinary arts, cabinetry, welding, etc. Community colleges also basically HAVE to admit anyone with a high school diploma, so if your GPA was in the toilet when high school ended and you have trouble getting into a four year school, they can be a good place to build a good academic record.

Q: Does a state university have the right to suggest an honor student drop out and go to some other college?
The state college was paid for a service not provided to a student. This very attractive female has only 6 weeks left of the semester and the university is not welcoming her to complete her education after working very hard for 2 years. Both her privacy and 1st Ammendment Rights have been violated.

A: If you feel that is the basis of a case, then I am sure there are zillions of attorneys in the local yellow pages advertising a free consultation. why not take a few up on their kind offer?
