college scholarships questions and answers
More information about college scholarships at Education News.
Q: Are there any good websites to look for college scholarships?
I am going to go back to college after a long hiatus. Are there any good places on the web to look for college scholarships, besides Fast Web? I am preferably looking for an answer from someone who has had success vs. someone who does a Google search and regurgitates information I already know.
A: What university are you going to? I got many of my scholarships from the university I went to. So if you go to a large school, be looking out for exclusive scholarships and grants for that school only.
Q: Are there any college scholarships for people who stutter?
I have been stuttering my whole life and I am heading off to college soon and I was wondering if there were any college scholarships for people who are stutter.
A: I couldn't find out, but you might go to one of these stuttering groups and ask
http://groups.myspace.com/stutteringfoundation
www.stutteringforum.com
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/stutteringchat/
You might also contact The Stuttering Foundation for help with your stuttering. Look for their books and DVDs at your public library.
Q: College/Scholarships?
Are there anything like some colleges (like Yale) doesn't ask for financial aid while the admission process. If you have the acceptance they give you the aid you need. Is it easier to have scholarship this way? Are there any other colleges has this process?
A: I'm in the same boat. Loads of colleges have that process, the important thing is to ask the college before you apply. Always communicate with colleges and find out about the entire process of admission, then ask about financial aid. If a college won't tell you about it, then its not worth going to.
Q: Where can I find easy college scholarships?
I go on fastweb.com and I don't think they have a very large selection. When I was in high school (soph in college now) they told us there were scholarships for people with green eyes, freckles etc. Where are these? I will write but I just wish that these weren't so complicated. Thanks and thanks so much!
A: try broadening your search or your personal infromation on fastweb. even if you aren't planning on majoring in some areas of have interest in them, you may can find some more scholarships that way. i have actually found a scholarship that they gave out for being left handed (even though im not i just found it)... they had a scholarship on there ofr having asthma, and there is another scholarship thing on there called brickfish that always has some of the easiest ones like sending in a pic of your fav time of the year, fav toy, fav pairs of shoes.. i get those kinds all the time. i dont know how but i get em and you can enter a pic more than once to incease your chances
Q: Where can I get college scholarships?
I have amazing grades but i have no idea where to get my college scholarships. Does anyone know a good website or actual scholarships that I could apply for and receive?
A: there are endless amounts of scholarships out there. Some good websites are schoolsoup.com, scholarships.com, fastweb.com, petersons.com, and of course a good old google or yahoo search.
Many colleges have scholarship information and resources on their financial aid websites. so I would suggest looking around at the websites of different schools (including the one you are interested in) and see what they give for scholarships.
You should also contact the financial aid office of the college and find out what kind of information they have on scholarships. Some schools will have different information that isn't always on their website. The financial aid office is always a valuable resource. Just keeping asking questions and you will have endless opportunities.
Good luck!
Q: Where can I find lesser known college scholarships?
There are some scholarships out there that noone knows about. I have applied to a few scholarships on fastweb.com, but I am looking for a site that might be less popular. My grades were decent in college, but not great (3.3 gpa). I am a great writer though and would love to find obscure essay writing scholarships that attract fewer applicants. I will be a grad student in a physical therapy program. Any suggestions?
A: I'm in the Kiwanis. I have been doing research on scholarship for about 2 years so we can give info to the kids in our youth programs so they can apply.
1. Go to www.ysa.org and sign up for their free newsletter. From time to time, major corporations use them to announce their scholarships.
2. Several corporations offer scholarships in the $1,500 to $10,000 range.
2.A An example of this is Best Buy ($1,500 from each store, and then national winners get $10,000). Its a 1 page application form and a 1 page essay on what you have learned by doing community service. Go to their website at: www.bestbuy.com - then click on: about us
2.B Go to www.kohls.com Same type of scholarship. If they have a store in your state, then you can apply if you have not graduated from high school. And you can start applying at age 6 (that is not a typo - age 6).
2.C Check with the McDonalds' stores in your area. Sometimes each locality (say county) association of store owners offer a scholarship. And sometimes the local Ronald McDonald House does also.
2.D Check with your local cable company. For example, Comcast offer an intership and scholarship for people interested in mass communications. Hmmm, a job and a scholarship which probably leads to a job offer with the company. Not bad.
There are a lot more.
HERE IS HOW I CAME UP WITH THESE - AND A LOT MORE:
1. Do a spreadsheet so you can track which company's websites you visit.
2. Come up with a company's name. Say CVS Pharmacy.
3. Go to www.quicken.com and find out what companies compete in that market segment with CVS (Rite Aid, Elkerd, Drug Fair, Krogers).
4. Then go to the website of each company. On the homepage, look for something like:
about us
corp info
5. Go there and then look for something like:
community
community involvement
social responsibility
giving back
This is where you will find out the details.
Many corporations prefer to give scholarships to students where they have stores located. This way, they are seen as "good neighbors". Its a good selling point to the local residents and politicians.
Also be sure to check each utility company in your state. In Virginia, there is 1 electric company with headquarters in the state - but they grant scholarships in counties where they do not sell electricity (Why? Cause each county has representatives in the state's General Assembly where their elected representatives vote on bills impacting the utility company. What is a few thousand dollars in scholarships to a multi-bilion dollar company?)
Q: Am I too late to apply for college scholarships?
I have applied to two colleges and am waiting to find out if I've been accepted. However, I have not applied for any kind of scholarships or financial aid. Am I too late?
A: Considering that you have not even been accepted to a school, you are still eligible for 95% of scholarships. Each scholarship has it's own deadline. You need to obtain the paperwork and read it to know it's requirements. Searching and applying for scholarships is not simple, but spending time on it is more financially rewarding than most people realize.
Q: What are some out-of-state college scholarships available?
im a softmore in high school living in Florida but i wanna get started early on scholarship oppurtunities.
Only i dont want to go to college in Florida i want to go to New York but most scholarships available to me right now are only for Florida colleges.
Does anyone know any good scholarships that are offered to students who want to go to an out of state college???
A: First : Start with contacting financial aid services at the school you hope to attend. If you are unsure at this time, ...
Second : Then you could contact your local financial aid advisor at the local college. Also, check out this site for more information on grants and loans:

Q: college scholarships and grants where can i find good ones?
i want to either attend university of southern california or clark atlanta ive been doing some scholarships entries but i had no luck so far ...does any one know what can i do to get money because i dont think ill get to much from fafsa but i dont know this college stuff is harder than it seems..all ideas are welcome
A: Even though you might not get anything from the government, the FAFSA is also used by the colleges. My dad makes a fair amount of money, too much for the government to give us anything directly, but we got more money from the college in scholarships and grants because we had filled out the FAFSA (which tells the college how much aid you need).
Q: What college scholarships are available for learning disabled kids?
He is 19 and a college freshman.
A: Check this out. I dont know how accurate or dependable this may be but its worth a shot!

Q: Am I supposed to apply for college and scholarships at the same time?
I'm applying to a college (University of Utah) and I'm doing early applications so the application is due in December. When should I apply for the scholarships that the college offers? Is it at the same time I apply for admission or later? The deadline for scholarships for the University is in February.
A: I would definately get the school application in and work hard on the scholarships following the application because the sooner the app is in and the scholarships follow right behind it you are more likely to recieve some. However, you need to know if you are accepted first so I would get that app sent in asap. So you don't waste your time on scholarships that you don't even qualify for. Hope it helps
Q: How can a homeschool student qualify for college scholarships?
We successfully homeschool but don't know how to obtain scholarships. We know of traditional students who have obtained scholarships for their ACT scores and musical achievements and basketball achievementments. What are available for homeschool students?
A: Home schoolers can qualify with high scores on ACT and/or SAT scores. Also, check within your state for available scholarships, many like Florida have groups that specifically grant scholarships to home schoolers.
Depending on whether or not you live in a home school friendly community, many home educated are allowed to enter into public school sporting activities as well as music and some are able to earn scholarships from those.
Then of course there is the National Merit Scholarship http://www.nationalmerit.org/ and finally, here is a whole slew of choices http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/olderkids/ContestsScholarships.htm
Hope that helps ~ :-)
Q: How do I find and apply for college scholarships?
My son will be graduating next year. I have no idea where to locate and apply for scholarships. He wants to be a cardiologist so we are sooooo gonna need help.
A: First, take a look at the schools he will be applying to. All schools have their own private scholarships, and perhaps your son will qualify for one of those.
Certainly you will want to complete the FAFSA [it is an application, not something you apply for] to find out if you qualify for federal monies. You don't complete the forms until after Jan. of his senior year in high school. And you will need to have completed your tax forms for the year in order to fill out the information required. The counselor at your son's school can give you more info.
Check out fastweb.com for a myriad of unusual scholarships, grants and interships that exist. I personally have never known anyone who actually GOT one through the site, but you never know! And again, check with the school. They will possibly have a listing of scholarships offered state-wide and locally.
There are many small scholarships and grants out there for specific populations. My cousin got a scholarship to nursing school because she had asthma and wanted to go into pulmonary nursing. Some unions award scholarships, as well as many companies.
Just beware of the consultants that offer 'help' in applying for aid and filling out the FAFSA. You don't need anyone's help, so save your money!!! Just do your own research online.
Good luck!

Im 18 and this is the end of my 10th grade year so I will be a junior next year when should I start applying for scholarships and college??? this is really important. Neither one of my parents graduated highschool or attended college.
A: Apply to Paul Smith's College. Call their Admsissions Department at 1800-421-2605
Q: What are some good websites for college scholarships?
I just want to find a site that isn't a scam or anything. Also, some advice on looking for scholarships would be great, too. Thanks in advance.
A: you should check out this site that i used... they have grants and college scholarships.. http://www.scholarshipmoms.com/mom-scholarship-programs.html
